Nationwide travel insurance review
Nationwide's policy was one of the highest-rated in our analysis
Nationwide's travel insurance comes with its FlexPlus packaged current account, along with UK and European breakdown assistance and worldwide family mobile phone insurance.
You will need to pay a £18 monthly fee for maintaining the account, but this covers you, your partner if they live with you, and children aged under 23 who live with you or their other parent. You can travel independently or together.
Nationwide's policies are underwritten by Aviva.

'Nationwide has put many standalone insurance policies to shame'
Dean Sobers, Which? travel insurance expert, says:
Nationwide's worldwide cover was one of the best scoring in our analysis, and a Best Buy.
It offers some of the most impressive cover for cancellation if, between you booking or insuring your trip and your date of departure, advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) changes and it recommends you don't travel to your destination. Covered scenarios include natural disasters, terrorism, infectious disease outbreaks and pandemics (including Covid-19). However, war and civil unrest aren't covered.
Alongside generally high levels of cover, the policy has comparatively low compulsory excesses (£50 for medical expenses, cancellation costs and loss of personal belongings).
It is also one of the few policies we rated that will pay out if your holiday provider or airline goes bankrupt.
Although it scored well in most areas we examined, it wasn't perfect. For example, if you incur expenses because of travel delays, it will pay up to £250 (£25 per 12 hours) to help you cover them, which is fairly unimpressive.
Family cover
If you take out Nationwide's FlexPlus packaged current account, your partner and any dependents (defined as being under 23, living with you or their other parent, and not married or in a civil partnership) will also be covered.
Is Nationwide good if you have a pre-existing medical condition?
If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you'll need to contact Nationwide to add it to the policy – which may mean paying extra. You can do this online or by phone.
Nationwide works with a medical screening company called Verisk to ask customers about their medical conditions.
Nationwide isn't a specialist provider for customers with pre-existing medical conditions, but this doesn't necessarily mean it won't be able to cover your medical condition at a reasonable price.
Aviva (Nationwide's underwriter) uses a claims handling company called Charles Taylor Assistance to handle its claims service.
85-90% of claims were accepted on Nationwide's FlexPlus policies between December 2024 and November 2025.
While we don't have industry statistics for this period, this acceptance rate is higher than the average industry average in 2024 (the most recent reported by the FCA). In that year, the average claims acceptance rate for worldwide cover was 84.5%.
Nationwide travel insurance: how can I claim?
For medical emergencies, call +44 (0)1603 605159. The claims line is available 24 hours a day.
For claims that aren't a medical emergency, call 0044 1243 976 418 to make a claim from abroad. To make a claim from the UK, call 0800 046 2555. These claims lines are open from 8am-6pm Monday to Friday, and 8am-4pm Saturdays and bank holidays. You can also claim online.
Insurers will usually expect you to try recouping lost costs (such as deposits) elsewhere before making an insurance claim – for example, checking with the travel provider whether you're entitled to a refund or can move a cancelled trip. However, you can still call the insurer to let it know if there's a chance you will need to claim.
The Nationwide FlexPlus Worldwide Travel Insurance policy has a score of 79% and is a Best Buy. Barclays Travel Pack – another Best Buy – earned the same score.
Nationwide's policy is hard to beat in terms of its cover. Whether it makes sense for you depends on your personal situation.
Unlike most travel insurance policies, which are personally priced, Nationwide has a fixed cost of £18 a month (£216 a year).
If you're single or young, it's likely that you could get a good (if not quite as good) policy for a lower price.
But if you're an older couple, or have children, Nationwide's fixed price could work in your favour, costing far less than several standalone travel insurance policies.
Also factor in the breakdown cover, mobile cover and the other banking benefits the account provides.
How we rate travel insurance
We analyse and rate 120 key elements of travel insurance policies to come up with the overall policy score. We assess how important each individual element is to travellers when choosing and using a travel insurance policy, and factor this in when calculating our total policy score.
Initially, we score all of the product elements out of five, reflecting how competitive each provider is in this area compared with other insurers. We then adjust the impact the more and less important elements have on the overall policy score.
Our 'Best Buy' badge recognises the individual products that stood out as being the most comprehensive in our analysis.
It doesn't reflect customer service. However, we do look at claims statistics published by the Financial Conduct Authority and complaints data from the Financial Ombudsman Service, where these are available. We won't give a Best Buy badge to providers shown to reject higher-than-average numbers of claims or that have a poor track record when it comes to complaints.
Policies named as Best Buys did well in our analysis of cover, with a policy score of at least 64%.
Additionally, Best Buy policies scored well consistently across different areas of cover. To make the cut, a policy needs to have scored at least three out of five points in two thirds of the features we compare (see 'Policy score' for more).
Lastly, all Best Buy policies must provide – either as standard or as an option – the following levels of cover as a minimum:
£5m cover for medical expenses – with emergency medical repatriation and some cover for emergency dental treatment
£2,000 cancellation and travel abandonment cover – including cancellation in the event that the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advises against travel to your destination country because of natural disaster after you've insured your holiday
Cancellation cover because of the illness, injury or death of a close family member or a person you were planning to stay with
Cover for travel delays – including cover for missing your outgoing or returning flight due to delays
£1,500 cover for baggage
£2m personal liability cover
