Vacuum cleaner has ‘extra-long’ reach

New Vax Mach Air Reach has 10m cord and 4.2m hose

Vax Mach Air Reach vacuum cleaner

Vax’s new Mach Air Reach – part of the ‘world’s lightest full-size multi-cyclonic vacuum cleaners’ collection – comes with an extended cleaning reach of up to 15 metres, the company claims.

The longer reach on this model could make it a easier option for uninterrupted vacuuming, if you’ve only got limited plug points in your home, or for vacuuming safely on stairs.

But the 15 metre figure measured by Vax takes in the length of the power cord (10 metres) as well as the full extension of the vacuum cleaner hose.

Vacuum cleaner reach

We take a real-life approach to measuring vacuum cleaner ‘reach’ (the distance a vacuum cleaner is able to travel) during our tests, measuring the length of the power cord to the front of the main vacuum cleaner body, through which most day-to-day vacuuming is carried out.

Which? vacuum cleaners expert Vivienne Fitzroy explains: ‘In our tests we measure the reach of an upright vacuum cleaner from the plug of the cord to the head of the main cleaner – because people usually vacuum using this rather than the extension hose. On average, an upright vacuum cleaner reach is around 8.6 metres – but we have recorded 11.3 metres, and nine and 10 metre power cords in the past too.’

Vax Mach Air Reach

Vax says this lightweight vacuum cleaner model is ‘very kind to your back’ – and at 4.9kg it’s not much heavier than the average cylinder vacuum cleaner. Our testers have already had a first look at the Vax Mach Air (U91-MA-B) from the same range and were impressed with the ease of manoeuvring it – though we’re reserving our final judgment on its performance until full tests results are back from our lab.

The Vax Mach Air Reach also has a Hepa filter, is bagless and has an adjustable handle.

With a price tag of £239.99, the Mach Air Reach is one of the pricier Vax vacuum cleaner models we’ve seen. It’s available now from and you’ll also receive a free ‘Gator’ handheld vacuum cleaner and six year guarantee.
