Hyundai Santa Fe

Hyundai Santa Fe – Well-equipped 4×4 for an appealing price

While the Kia above is a hardy workhorse, the Hyundai Santa Fe offers a little more luxury – although many of the oily bits are shared between the two cars. The Santa Fe offers lots of interior space and standard equipment, plus four-wheel drive, for an appealing price. The rearmost seats aren’t the most generously sized for adults, however.

Nissan Qashqai+2 – Compact crossover with seven seats

The Nissan Qashqai+2 is smaller than some rivals, but you still get space for seven – provided you only attempt to squeeze children into the third-row seats. A new Qashqai arrives in showrooms in January, meaning you should be able to negotiate large discounts on the current model. We’ve spotted savings of around £3,000 from online car brokers.

Volvo XC90 5

Volvo XC90 – Large off-roader with lots of space

The Volvo XC90 may be rather long in the tooth (it was launched in 2002), but you can save an enormous £8,000 on list prices by shopping online. The XC90 is a fully-fledged luxury 4×4 with a huge, comfortable interior and plenty of space for seven people. It also boasts a strong 200bhp D4 2.4-litre diesel engine and powerful, progressive brakes.

Mitsubishi Outlander 2013

Mitsubishi Outlander – Frugal 4×4 with room for seven

Like the Nissan Qashqai, the Mitsubishi Outlander’s third row of seats works best for children. Fortunately, space and comfort levels in the front two rows of seats is impressive. The Outlander performed well in our lab test, delivering average fuel economy close to 50mpg. That means you can keep driving through winter snow, but won’t pay the price at the pumps for the rest of the year.

Find out how the Outlander performs on the road in our Mitsubishi Outlander review.
