The Easter weekend is a great time to spruce up your garden for the summer ahead. Which? has some top tips for jobs to do now.
1. Plant up hanging baskets
April is a great time to plant hanging baskets, although you may need to protect them from frost until the end of May.
Make sure you use a good quality compost to get the best displays throughout the summer. We’ve just published the results of our latest test of compost for containers and hanging baskets.
We can recommend Best Buy container composts. There’s also a recommended peat-free compost that will keep your trailing begonias looking good for months.
Don’t forget to add a Best Buy slow-release fertiliser too, to keep your plants healthy when the compost finally runs out of steam.
2. Start to grow your own
It’s not too late to sow your own seeds for crops of delicious home-grown veg this summer.
To help you choose the best varieties we have created a list of the best vegetables and salad from our extensive plant trials.
We’ve grown all of the vegetables that we recommend ourselves, comparing the newest varieties to the ‘old favourites’ that many gardeners grow year after year. We only recommend the tastiest, biggest cropping and most disease resistant, so you won’t be disappointed.
So if you want to know which cherry or beefsteak tomatoes, courgettes or blight-resistant potatoes to grow, check out our Best Buys.
3. Give your lawn some TLC
After a water-logged winter, your lawn will benefit from a bit of love over Easter.
Start mowing your lawn once a week, beginning with the lawn mower’s blades at the highest setting and gradually lowering them over the coming weeks. For a perfect finish, trim the lawn’s edges with long-handled shears or a strimmer.
If your mower needs replacing, see our lawn mower reviews – we’ve tested more than 90 models.
If your lawn has seen distinctly better days, revitalise the bare or thin patches with one of our Best Buy lawn seeds, chosen from the 22 we tested in 2013.
4. Clean patios and decking
Get your wellies on and take a pressure washer to your patio or decking to shift the dirt and algae that our winter of heavy rain’s left behind.
Watch our patio cleaning video if you’re unsure how to use your pressure washer to get the best results.
If you’re looking for a new pressure washer, be sure to check out our pressure washers reviews to help you choose the right model for your household.
5. Sit back and enjoy…
A garden is a place to enjoy, so don’t forget to take some time to kick back and relax with your May copy of Which? Gardening.
