Kenwood's kMix stand mixers get a cool metallic update

Kenwood has launched itself headfirst into the copper craze with its new line of on-trend stand mixers

Following the rise in popularity of copper and rose gold kitchen appliances, Kenwood has launched its flagship kMix stand mixer in a range of new colours.

After the stir caused by Nigella Lawson's stylish copper stand mixer on her show 'At My Table' back in 2017, metallic kitchen accessories became all the rage.

But with the KitchenAid offering favoured by Nigella costing just under £800, metallic chic wasn't an affordable option for many - until now.

Kenwood's released its popular kMix in a selection of metallic sheens and, thanks to a Black Friday deal, you can get your hands on the stand mixer for just £269. Keep reading to find out where.

Kenwood kMix new colours: what's available?

We reviewed our first Kenwood kMix back in 2014, but until recently, the range was only available to buy in black, white, red, or cream.

Last year, Kenwood launched a limited-edition kMix KMX760 stand mixer in rose gold, but it was exclusively sold as part of a bundle that also contained a kettle and toaster (and cost £650).

Now, you can pick one up for as little as £269 in the Black Friday sales, and it's also available in gold, black steel, and chrome.

These stand mixers all come with:

  • 1,000W motor power
  • Variable speed settings
  • A polished 5-litre stainless-steel bowl
  • Splashguard and cord storage
  • A dough hook, beater and whisk

If you're wondering whether you should be spending more and splashing out on a KitchenAid model, you're not alone. But is the higher price justified?

Take a look at our Kenwood vs KitchenAid page to see which really is the best, based on brand reliability, our test lab scores, and whether or not Kenwood and KitchenAid owners would recommend them.

Alternatively, you can buy one now from from Currys PC World or John Lewis, or take a look at our other Black Friday deals on stand mixers.

The kMix Monochromatics range

If you're not a fan of metallics, it doesn't mean you have to miss out on this stylish mixer as the Kenwood kMix KMX750 comes in white, cream, red, and black.

Otherwise, very similar to the KMX760, these monochromatic models come with aluminium coated bowls with a slightly smaller capacity (4.6 litres), and replace the KM754 glass bowl models.

These usually cost around £349, but you can pick one up for just £249 from John Lewis as part of its Black Friday special offers.

The KMX750 also includes:

  • A powerful 1,000W motor
  • Six speed settings plus a fold function
  • Smart speed controls
  • A beater, balloon whisk and dough hook

While some people prefer glass bowls, metal bowls are certainly easier to work with, as they're lighter and easier to clean. They're also cheaper to replace if for any reason you need to buy a new one.

Choosing the best stand mixer

Stand mixers range wildly in price, from less than £100 up to almost £1,000, and spending more doesn't necessarily mean you're getting a better model.

When choosing a stand mixer, there are several features you should consider before parting with your hard-earned cash.

Make sure your chosen model comes with all of the accessories you'll need, to save you from spending more money on extra tools.

It's also worth looking out for these extra features:

  • Splashguard This covers the mixing bowl to prevent ingredients flying out and spattering you during mixing.
  • Flexi-beater A standard beater with a flexible spatula edge on one side. Ideal for scraping down the sides of the bowl after mixing.
  • Jug blender Useful for blending smoothies or soup - some can also crush ice.
  • Food processor attachment Can be attached to your stand mixer to help you slice or grate ingredients.

Other (less common) accessories include meat mincers, pasta makers, spiralizers, and biscuit cutters.

Mixer and bowl size

You need to be sure you've got enough space on your kitchen counter to accommodate a stand mixer, especially if it's on the large side.

If you're going to be storing your stand mixer in a cupboard, think about how heavy it is and whether or not it's easy for you to lift.

You should also consider bowl size. If you bake in particularly large batches (more than two cakes at once), you'll need to opt for a mixer with a large-capacity bowl - 500ml or more.

Speed settings and wattage

This isn't a huge concern unless you specifically require a wide range of speed options. We've found that the wattage of the machine isn't normally a reliable indicator of quality.

However, there are some extra mixer settings worth looking out for:

  • Pause Allows you to stop the mixer to add ingredients and then restart it on the same speed.
  • Fold A gentle folding motion to add flour into cake mixes without removing all the air.
  • Soft-start Even if you start the mixer on top speed, it will speed up slowly and gently to keep your ingredients inside the bowl.

Dishwasher safe

Look for a model with dishwasher-safe attachments, as cleaning them by hand can be a huge headache.

Be sure to check the washing instructions, though, as putting accessories in on a hot wash could split the plastic.

Usually it's best to wash them on the top shelf and avoid the drying cycle too.

Spare parts and storage

Most well-established stand mixer brands, such as Kenwood and KitchenAid, will have a wide range of spare parts available.

These will come in handy if you decide to invest in some extra attachments, but also if one of your accessories gets lost or broken.

You should also consider where you're going to store these. Some stand mixers are designed so you can pack away the accessories in the bowl, but with others you may have to set aside some extra cupboard space.
