Top five cheapest energy deals for May 2019

You could save £50 more than last month thanks to more available cheap deals

The choice of cheaper energy deals has grown over the past month, and switching to one of the cheapest could save you around £374 per year. That's more than we've seen for several months.

You might be able to save this amount if you're currently on a tariff charging the maximum amount permitted by the energy price cap on standard tariffs.

In total, there's a choice of 37 deals costing £1,000 or less per year for households that use a medium amount of gas and electricity. Back in December there were just eight.

Although price is the main reason that most people switch to a new energy firm, customer service is important too. In fact, poor customer service is one of the main reasons people choose to leave their current provider.

Below we reveal the cheapest energy deals on the market, along with the top energy deals from highly rated suppliers.

Cheapest gas and electricity deals

Here are the five cheapest dual-fuel deals for this month, based on annual average prices for a household that uses a medium amount of gas and electricity.

We've listed the annual price and also how much you would save compared with the current price cap. The energy price cap is set at £1,254 on average per year for medium customers on standard or default tariffs. Many of the biggest firms are charging this amount, including British Gas, EDF Energy, Eon, Npower and Scottish Power. SSE is charging £1 less.

However, your exact spend depends on how much gas and electricity you use.

The two cheapest deals are from Outfox the Market for the second month running. The cheapest of its deals costs £880 per year. As a variable tariff its prices could change - upwards or downwards - if Outfox the Market changes its prices (it must give you 30 days' notice).

Its other tariff costs £18 more a month. It's a fixed deal so the rates you are charged won't change for a year. But if you do want to switch before the end of the tariff, you'll have to pay £30 per fuel in exit fees.

None of the other five cheapest tariffs have exit fees this month.

Cheap deals from energy companies with good customer reviews

Finding a price you're willing to pay with a firm offering quality customer service is a delicate balancing act. None of the five cheapest firms above are big enough to have been included in our latest energy companies survey.

So here we've listed deals costing less than £1,000 a year from companies that scored very well in our latest satisfaction survey.

While these tariffs will save you slightly less than the top five cheapest deals overall, you can be confident that they provide good customer service.

Only one tariff from Octopus Energy is listed, but we found six of its tariffs costing less than £1,000 per year, so there's plenty of choice.
