'Two strong policies'
Dean Sobers, Which? travel insurance expert, says:
Its highest-scoring policy, Black, earned a policy score of 67%, placing it among the top 40% of policies we analysed.
If you've planned the (expensive) trip of a lifetime, this policy could appeal, given its particularly high cancellation limit of £10,000.
We were also impressed with its high cover limits for baggage (£3,000) and valuables (£600). However, it's not perfect. It doesn't contain cover for delayed baggage, for example. And it excludes claims relating to war, terrorism or civil unrest.
No excesses
InsureandGo's Black policy is one of the few we rated that doesn't apply excesses to your claims, meaning if the claim is accepted, you'll be paid in full.
Among policies applying excesses, the average for a medical or cancellation claim is around £85.
Gold, Silver and Budget
InsureandGo's Gold policy was also rated a Best Buy and has a policy score of 65%, joining Black in the top 40% of policies reviewed.
The Silver policy, with a policy score of 60%, was just below average (62%). Along with some differences in cover levels, there are also slight differences in the excesses you'd pay on the Gold and Silver policies (£50 and £60, respectively).
The Budget policy has higher excesses and lacks certain features found in other InsureandGo policies, such as missed-departure cover. Its score of 53% placed it in the bottom 20% of policies we assessed.
Days per trip
With annual policies, Black will cover trips lasting up to 56 days. For Silver and Gold, the limit is 45 days. With Budget, it's 31 days.
Single-trip policies can cover up to a year's travel.
Is InsureandGo good if you have a medical condition?
InsureandGo is a listed medical specialist insurer, meaning it's worth trying if you have trouble getting cover for a reasonable price because of your medical history.
You'll need to declare your conditions to ensure they're covered. InsureandGo works with Verisk, a medical screening company, to evaluate your medical risk.
Be warned: while InsureandGo is a specialist for those with medical conditions, its Budget policy doesn't cover these at all. So if you want your conditions covered, this particular policy won't be suitable.
InsureandGo uses a company handling firm called Gallagher Bassett to handle its claims.
The latest published data from the Financial Conduct Authority, current to 2024, shows that InsureandGo accepted 85-90% of claims made on European annual policies that year, in line with the average of 86.3%.
Meanwhile, it accepted 80-85% of claims made on annual worldwide and single-trip policies. These figures put it in line with the average for worldwide cover (84.5%) and above the average for single-trip cover (80%).
InsureandGo travel insurance: how can I claim?
InsureandGo's claims number is +44 (0)141 343 1350.
Insurers will usually expect you to try recouping lost costs (such as deposits) elsewhere before claiming with them – for example, checking with the travel provider if you're entitled to a refund or can move a cancelled trip. However, you can still call the insurer to let it know if there's a chance you'll need to claim.
You'll need to provide your policy number when you call.
Yes. With two Best Buy options, InsurandGo is well worth checking out, particularly if you've been struggling to cover pre-existing medical conditions with other insurers.
How we rate travel insurance
We analyse and rate 120 key elements of travel insurance policies to come up with the overall policy score. We assess how important each individual element is to travellers when choosing and using a travel insurance policy, and factor this in when calculating our total policy score.
Initially, we score all of the product elements out of five, reflecting how competitive each provider is in this area compared with other insurers. We then adjust the impact the more and less important elements have on the overall policy score.
Our 'Best Buy' badge recognises the individual products that stood out as being the most comprehensive in our analysis.
It doesn't reflect customer service. However, we do look at claims statistics published by the Financial Conduct Authority and complaints data from the Financial Ombudsman Service, where these are available. We won't give a Best Buy badge to providers shown to reject higher-than-average numbers of claims or that have a poor track record when it comes to complaints.
Policies named as Best Buys did well in our analysis of cover, with a policy score of at least 64%.
Additionally, Best Buy policies scored well consistently across different areas of cover. To make the cut, a policy needs to have scored at least three out of five points in two thirds of the features we compare (see 'Policy score' for more).
Lastly, all Best Buy policies must provide – either as standard or as an option – the following levels of cover as a minimum:
£5m cover for medical expenses – with emergency medical repatriation and some cover for emergency dental treatment
£2,000 cancellation and travel abandonment cover – including cancellation in the event that the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advises against travel to your destination country because of natural disaster after you've insured your holiday
Cancellation cover because of the illness, injury or death of a close family member or a person you were planning to stay with
Cover for travel delays – including cover for missing your outgoing or returning flight due to delays
£1,500 cover for baggage
£2m personal liability cover
