Post Office travel insurance review

The Post Office insurance offers three levels of annual and single-trip cover: Premier, Standard and Economy .

If you're buying a policy for your family, children under 18 without medical conditions are covered free on these policies.

The provider also offers backpacker cover for travellers (aged 18-60) looking to make more extended trips, which we've not been able to review.

The Post Office is underwritten by Collinson Insurance, a trading name of Astrenska Insurance Limited.

Is Post Office travel insurance good if you have a medical condition?

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you'll need to declare it when obtaining your quote, which may result in a higher premium.

The Post Office works with a medical screening company called Verisk to assess customers' medical conditions.

The Post Office isn't a specialist provider for customers with pre-existing medical conditions, but this doesn't necessarily mean it won't be able to cover your condition at a reasonable price.

If you are struggling to obtain cover, check our guide on travel insurance if you have a medical condition.

How good is the Post Office at handling claims?

The latest data from the Financial Conduct Authority shows that the Post Office's underwriter, Astrenska, paid out 90-95% of claims made on annual European policies in 2023. This was above the average rate of 82.20%.

It accepted 85-90% of claims made on annual worldwide policies, above the average of 78.90%.

And it settled 85-90% of claims made on single-trip policies, above the average rate of 80.40%.

Post Office travel insurance: how can I claim?

For medical emergencies abroad, call +44 (0)208 865 3074.

To make a non-emergency claim, call 0333 333 9702 or claim online.

Insurers will usually expect you to try recouping lost costs (such as deposits) elsewhere before claiming with them - for example, checking with the travel provider if you're entitled to a refund or can move a cancelled trip. However, you can still call the insurer to let them know if there's a chance you will need to claim.

You'll need to provide your policy number when you call.
