Who is the AA?
The AA started in 1905 as a small group of motoring enthusiasts who came together to warn other drivers about speed traps.
It has since grown to offer a variety of financial products such as roadside cover home insurance, car insurance, travel insurance, and credit cards.
The AA is a public company, listed on the London Stock Exchange.

How Which? rates AA's home insurance

We survey thousands of real home insurance customers to find out how they rate their insurer for customer satisfaction.

AA’s home insurance policy: is it good or bad?
In February 2019, we analysed and rated 60 of the most important elements of standard home insurance policies to come up with the overall policy score.
We assess how important each individual element is when choosing and using a home insurance policy, and weight it accordingly when calculating our total policy score. Each element is given a star rating, out of five.
Overall, 45 out of the 60 features of AA's contents and buildings insurance policy earned a 3-star rating or higher.
While 20 of the AA's policy elements were given a full 5-star rating, the majority of the features in its policy were given a 3-star rating or below.
The AA's home insurance offers fairly average cover - there are more comprehensive policies available elsewhere.
Best parts of AA's home insurance policy
We've identified three standout features in AA's home insurance policy:
- A £750 cover limit for money kept inside and outside the home, which we gave a 4-star rating.
- The £15,000 cover limit for bicycles kept away from home, which we awarded a 5-star rating.
- Covering damage caused by the gradual build-up of groundwater as standard, which we also gave a 5-star.
Worst parts of AA's home insurance policy
We've identified three features in AA's home insurance policy which scored poorly:
- Boiler cover is not included under home emergency in this policy, which we gave a 0-star rating
- A £1,500 limit single item limit for valuables not specified on your policy, which scored 1 star.
- A £25,000 limit to cover alternative accommodation, which we scored 2 stars.

How do customers rate AA home insurance?
As well as looking at how AA's home insurance policy stacks up against others, we've also analysed how customers feel about it too.
Which?'s rating for customer satisfaction is based on feedback from real customers. The score is made up of a customer's overall satisfaction with the brand, and how likely they are to recommend that brand.
Overall, AA home insurance scored 68% for customer satisfaction, placing it 23rd out of the 34 home insurers we looked at.
Customers scored AA's 'clarity of policy' the highest, giving it four stars out of five. The transparency of AA's charges and penalties was scored the lowest by customers and only received two stars.

Does AA offer different levels of home insurance cover?
The scores shown in this review relate to AA's standard home insurance policy. If you would like to take out home insurance with the AA but need more cover, you could opt for the AA Home Insurance Plus Policy.
This policy offers:
- Unlimited cover for replacement locks and keys
- £10,000 trace and access cover
- Includes accidental damage as standard
Due to the increased level of cover, the AA Home Insurance Plus policy is likely to be more expensive than its standard home insurance policy.
How much does AA home insurance cost?
Your contents insurance and buildings insurance will be priced based on your own personal circumstances, where you live and the type of property and contents you own.

What is the AA's home insurance claims number?
If you need to make a claim with AA home insurance call 0370 606 1617.
According to the AA, you'll be asked what happened and when it happened, and what action you've taken so far.
Then you'll be asked what you're claiming for and the approximate cost involved.
The acid test of any home insurance provider is how it handles your claim. In January 2019, Which? surveyed 1,456 members of the general public about their experiences using a major home insurance provider.
The AA scored 74%, placing it 10th out of 21 home insurers. It scored four stars for the speed of dealing with a claim, and three stars for how it communicated about the progress of claims.
