Dean Sobers, Which? home insurance expert, says:

Tesco’s contents policy ranked 10th (out of 72) in our table and is a Best Buy with a score of 70%. Its buildings cover wasn’t quite as impressive, but earned a respectable 71%, which was in line with the average score in our analysis.
We also received excellent feedback from claimants in our customer survey, so we've made Tesco Insurance a Which? Recommended Provider (WRP) – along with NFU Mutual.
Unlike many policies, Tesco’s cover includes some accidental damage cover as standard. This protects against breakages to items, such as fixed ceramic or glass surfaces and your home entertainment system, without you having to pay more to add this cover. You can then choose to include more accidental damage cover for other possessions or fixtures.
There were still some areas where it was lacking. It’s not currently a member of Flood Re’s Build Back Better scheme, for example. Under this scheme, insurers fund policyholders making flood claims to install adaptations that will make their homes less vulnerable to severe water damage in the future (for example, water-resilient paints and plasters).
And its storm damage cover, while generally impressive, doesn’t cover fences, gates or hedges, or fixed items in the open (such as outdoor hot tubs).
All the policies we looked at have storm cover – but ‘storm’ can be a nebulous term. Some insurers disallow certain kinds of storm if they're not accompanied by high winds, such as heavy rain or blizzards.
Tesco has one of the more generous interpretations, stating that one of these four weather events needs to have taken place for a storm claim to be viable:
We asked Tesco Insurance customers who have recently made a claim how they felt about their home insurance.
Tesco received a customer score of 81%, placing it third and close to the top of our table.
It also scored 81% when we asked customers to rate its claims handling – joint third out of 22 providers. See the full list of results here.
When we asked more about the ratings that customers gave Tesco Insurance, one claimant told us: 'They process claims quickly and fairly when I need support, without unnecessary delays or complications.'
Another happy customer added: 'Great speed from when I reported the water leak to getting the money for the burst pipes. Wonderful no-quibble resolution.'
