HSBC home insurance review

HSBC got great scores from customers, but its cover is average
Dean SobersSenior researcher & writer

HSBC offers a wide range of financial products, including home insurance, life insurance, pet insurance and travel insurance.

We've reviewed its standard Home insurance policy, which is underwritten by Aviva Insurance Ltd. You can buy this policy direct from HSBC – online or over the phone – but not from any price comparison websites.

We've also surveyed 60 HSBC customers who have recently made a home insurance claim.

‘HSBC's policy doesn't match its glowing customer scores’

Dean Sobers, Which? home insurance expert, says:

Dean Sobers

HSBC’s policy did OK in our analysis, without excelling. It achieved a score of 69% for its buildings cover, slightly shy of the 71% average. And it earned 66% for its contents cover, which was approaching the 68% average.

It covers water damage resulting from burst pipes - and you can pay extra to have cover for blocked pipes, too. However, unlike some policies, its cover stops short of covering repairs to the pipes themselves.

More positively, its personal possessions cover (and optional extra) will cover your phone for up to £1,500.

No fee for paying monthly

If you pay for the cover by the month instead of all at once, HSBC won’t charge you extra in fees or interest for the privilege.

When paying in instalments, interest would be charged on about half of the policies we checked.

How did customers rate HSBC home insurance?

We asked HSBC customers who have recently made a claim how they felt about their home insurance.

HSBC received a customer score of 78%, coming an impressive 3rd in our table of 17 providers rated.

It scored 72% when we asked people to rate its claims handling – again 3rd out of 24 brands compared. See the list of results here.

When we asked more about the rating customers gave HSBC, one customer said it provides 'top-notch service', with another stating: 'HSBC was very quick to respond and deal with the claim, and to send out a team to assess the damage'.

How can you save money on HSBC home insurance?

You won't find HSBC on price comparison sites, making it slightly less convenient to compare with other insurers.

It's still worth checking out what the competition offers on comparison sites, though.

You can get an HSBC home insurance quote on its website and over the phone – there will be no difference in the amount you're quoted. There's no discount for buying buildings and contents insurance together.

Want to pay monthly? Good news - HSBC doesn't charge extra if you choose to pay in monthly instalments.

Above information is correct as of August 2025. For more ways to save money when buying insurance, see our guide.

How does HSBC compare with other providers?

With a customer score of 78%, HSBC is 3rd in our table, just below Bank of Scotland and Which? Recommended Provider NFU Mutual

Its buildings cover for its standard Home policy scored 69%. The AA and Admiral's standard policies scored 70%.

HSBC's policy for contents cover scored 66%, behind Nationwide, Santander and Direct Line on 67%.

Should you buy HSBC home insurance?

We were largely underwhelmed by the cover in HSBC's policy – but its customers begged to differ, placing it high in our tables when it came to customer service and value for money.

Consequently, if its policy specifically provides the cover you're after, and it's offered at a reasonable price, HSBC could be for you.
