Of 76 buildings policies rated, Nationwide’s two policies shared 8th place with a score of 78%. Unfortunately, a mediocre customer score meant they couldn't be Best Buys.
Its standard contents policy – which covers up to £50,000 worth of possessions – was a little less impressive, with a score of 67% (just below the average of 68%).
Its buildings and contents policies have comparatively low compulsory excesses: £50 for most kinds of claim (the average is around £100). Its contents policy also covers digital downloads up to £1,000.
We were less impressed with its comparatively low level of cover for business equipment, at £3,000, and its low levels of cover for stolen contents that had been left in the open, at £750.
If your dog scratches up your carpet or knocks something off a table, your typical home insurer is apt to shrug and say ‘bad luck’. However, Nationwide’s policies were among a fifth of those we examined to cover damage caused by domestic pets.
For customers with more than £50,000 of contents to cover, Nationwide’s ‘Unlimited’ policy offers higher contents cover in various areas across its policy, resulting in a contents score of 70%, just above the average of 68%.
We asked Nationwide customers who have recently made a claim how they felt about their home insurance.
Nationwide received a customer score of 67% – joint 12th out of 17 providers rated.
It scored 65% when we asked people to rate its claims handling, 14th out of 24 brands compared. See the list of results here.
When we asked more about the rating customers gave Nationwide, many said their policies were 'affordable', and one policyholder saying the insurer 'thoroughly explained the process involved'. However, others were less satisfied: 'It's taking a long time to get things done.'
