Churchill is a UK-based insurance company that's famed for its grinning bulldog mascot. Since 1990, it has offered home insurance and has now broadened its product range to include car insurance, travel insurance, pet insurance and even cycling insurance.

Churchill is part of the Direct Line Group, which also includes Direct Line, Green Flag and Privilege, and its home insurance is underwritten by UK Insurance Ltd.

We've reviewed Churchill's standard Home policy, as well as its more comprehensive Home Plus policy. We also surveyed 58 Churchill customers who've recently made a home insurance claim.

‘Look out for underwhelming cover levels’

Dean Sobers, Which? home insurance expert, says:

Dean Sobers

Churchill’s standard policy, named 'Home insurance' sat in the bottom fifth of our table when it came to its buildings cover, with 67% – and managed a middling 66% for its contents cover.

It provides most of the basics – for example, including cover for burst pipes, protecting your contents (including cash) within your home and laying on £500 of cover for guests’ belongings.

However, it wasn’t always the most generous when it came to cover levels. For example, the alternative accommodation cover with its buildings policy was lacking, at £25,000. Most policies we looked at provide upwards of £50,000.

Switching fees

If you switch insurer before renewal, you can incur steep early cancellation fees with some providers. Churchill tries to take the sting out of this for customers interested in switching to it by offering to reimburse their cancellation costs – up to £55.

Home Plus

Churchill’s more comprehensive alternative – the Home Plus policy – was a much stronger performer in our analysis and is a Best Buy for its contents cover.

It scored 70% for buildings (just below the average of 71%), and was among the top fifth of policies rated for contents, with 76%.

How did customers rate Churchill's home insurance?

We asked customers who have recently made a claim how they felt about their home insurance. Churchill received a customer score of 68% – joint 10th out of 17 providers rated.

Customers were also asked to rate their most recent claim. Here, Churchill received a score of 67% – again joint 10th, this time out of the 24 providers we scored. See the list of results here.

When we asked customers why they gave Churchill the score they did, one customer told us: 'They are extremely helpful and the policy is tailored to my exact needs.'

Another told us that it was straightforward to make a claim and 'they dealt with the companies direct'. A claimant who is in their eighties and lives alone was happy that an item damaged in a fire 'was replaced in three days.'
