TalkTalk broadband review

TalkTalk has grown dramatically since it was founded in 2003, and it's now one of the four biggest home broadband providers in the UK. However, that doesn't necessarily mean it's one of the best. Our latest customer survey reveals how TalkTalk broadband customers rated their TalkTalk broadband service.
Each year, we survey thousands of UK broadband customers to check how they rate each big provider's speed, reliability, customer service and value for money. Read on for our review or use the free broadband comparison service from Which? to find the best TalkTalk broadband deal for you.
Is TalkTalk broadband any good?
Our research showed that TalkTalk broadband customers had mixed reviews of the service they received.
- 'They are OK unless you have an issue, then it's very difficult – you go around in circles for ages.'
- 'I haven't experienced any serious issues since I started using it. A few times the service has gone off at night and I have had to switch off and switch on the router a few times, but otherwise it's OK.'

Does TalkTalk put up broadband prices every year?
Yes ‒ so if you do decide to take up a broadband contract with TalkTalk, keep in mind that it will raise the price of your deal in April each year.
In August 2024, TalkTalk introduced a fixed price increase. Now if you take out a broadband deal with TalkTalk, it will increase the amount you pay by £4 per month every spring.
If you took out a deal with TalkTalk before August 2024, your contract will include a price increase that is based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rate of inflation as published in January plus an extra 3.7%.
What is Fixed Price Plus?
This is an add-on available for certain TalkTalk contracts that allows you to fix the amount you will pay for the full length of your contract, by agreeing to pay an additional fee. It can be added to TalkTalk's deals for £4-£5 per month. As a result, you get to avoid TalkTalk's annual £4 price increase.
A fixed price may sound promising, but the value of the offer depends on the length of your contract and when in the year you sign up. To confirm for sure, use the month your deal is starting in, and the length of your contract to calculate how much more you'll pay as a result of the £4 price rise every April. For example, if your 24-month contract starts in June:
- You will pay the original price for the first 10 months of your contract.
- You will pay an additional £48 (£4 x 12) from that April to the following March.
- You will then pay an additional £16 (£8 x 2) for the final two months of your contract.
That means the price increase will cost an additional £64 over the full length of your contract courtesy of price increases. Meanwhile, Fixed Price Plus would cost an estimated extra £4 every month for the full two years – a total of £96 over the course of your contract.
However, if your contract began in March, just before the price rise was applied, then Fixed Price Plus could just be worth it (it could mean paying £96 rather than £144), though providers will sometimes waive the price rise for customers who join in the month prior.
TalkTalk started offering the fixed price promise when its price rises were unpredictable. Customers who took out a deal prior to August 2024 had inflation-based price rises included in contracts. Because you were unlikely to know the rate of inflation in advance, the fixed-price promise used to be more of a gamble – it might cost you more, but it could save you money under the right circumstances, too.
However, now things are much clearer, it's definitely worth doing your homework before committing.
What is the latest TalkTalk router?
TalkTalk's Fibre 35, Fibre 65, Fibre 150 and Full Fibre 65 packages come with its Sagemcom Wi-Fi Hub router.
Customers who sign up to one of TalkTalk's full fibre plans will receive an Amazon Eero 6 router – this will only work on the TalkTalk network.
All routers are provided for free with the package.
What is TalkTalk Total Home Wi-Fi?
This is an add-on service that guarantees 'wall-to-wall coverage' in your home, so that it's possible to get online in every room.
The add-on works by creating a mesh network of multiple devices working together, including a WiFi boosting device (or more than one if you need it). You'll also get access to advice and troubleshooting from TalkTalk's support team.
There are a few caveats:
- Access to Total Home Wi-Fi isn't available in every location, so if this is important to you check before you sign up.
- The download speed in eligible rooms only has to be 3Mbps, despite TalkTalk full-fibre services having average download speeds of 77Mbps, 152Mbps, 525Mbps and 944Mbps.
- It will cover a maximum of six bedrooms.
- Basements, cellars and outbuildings are excluded from total home coverage.
Total Home Wi-Fi usually costs an extra £8 per month and must be taken on an 18 or 24-month basis – if you have less time left on your contract, you'll have to recommit to the new duration. However, if you don't receive total home coverage in the first 45 days, you can cancel that part of your contract (though not your broadband service altogether).
