Admiral was set up in 1993, originally specialising in car insurance. It now offers a wide variety of products, including pet insurance.

Customers can choose from its selection of lifetime and time-limited policies for dogs and cats, all of which include access to a free 24-hour helpline for advice from a UK-registered vet.

Its multi-pet insurance offers a discount of up to 15% per pet and you could get an extra 10% off if you hold other Admiral insurance policies.

'Here's my view on Admiral's pet cover'

Dean Sobers, Which? pet insurance expert, says:

Lifetime policies are the only type we recommend, and Admiral's Platinum Gold, Silver, Bronze and Blue policies appear to offer this cover.

But the real quality of these policies can only be judged by looking at their specific cover limits for a range of incidents.

How good is Admiral at handling claims?

It's all very well having great cover on paper, but will the insurer pay out when the time comes?

That's why we look at industry data on how often insurers pay out, and how many claimants make a complaint — and a worse-than-average record can stop a policy being a Best Buy.

Admiral: how can I claim?

You can claim with Admiral through its website. You can also ask your vet to make a claim for you, but not all vets will do this.

If you make a claim yourself, make sure you have a copy of the pet's medical details and any paperwork or invoices detailing the costs of its treatment.

You can also call Admiral on 0333 777 7362.
