The AA’s best policy Platinum scored 65%. This was decently above average (62%), and a few decimal points off being considered as a Best Buy.
We liked that the policy doesn’t charge you an extra excess if you use a repairer that isn’t part of the insurer’s approved network.
Also, if you’re stranded due to an accident, the AA's policies include £500 'onward travel' cover to get you to where you need to be, or the same amount towards overnight accommodation if you'll need to stay overnight.
The policies didn't do so well in our analysis for admin fees. You're charged £28 to set up and renew your policy and an eye-watering £60.50 if you cancel early.
With many policies, only the main driver (the person who uses the car the most) can earn a no-claims discount (NCD). This can leave you at a disadvantage if you share a car as a named driver, but don't have your own separate policy.
The AA's policies allow named drivers to build their separate NCD, which is fairly uncommon. However, if you build NCD this way, it will only be usable if you later take out an AA policy yourself; you can't transfer it to other insurance providers.
The AA's standard policy (Gold) was in the top half of our tables. We gave it a score of 63%. Meanwhile, its lowest-tier option – Bronze – managed 61%. This was still close to average.
We asked customers of the AA who have recently made a claim how they felt about their car insurance.
The AA earned a customer score of 75%, which places it in the middle of our customer satisfaction table (6th out of 12), alongside Admiral car insurance and Allianz car insurance. It also scored 75% when assessed specifically for its claims service (joint 6th out of 14). The average customer and claims scores were 76% and 75%.
One customer told us that they find the AA to be 'trustworthy and reliable', with another agreeing that they've 'never been let down in 10 years'. However, another policyholder was frustrated and commented that it was 'difficult to get information from them in a timely fashion'.
Here's how customers rated the AA in various areas of service:
| How comprehensive the policy cover is | |
| How affordable the policies are | |
| How thorough the application process is | |
| Clarity of policy | |
| Dealing with queries | |
| Fair treatment of long-standing customers | |
| Dealing with complaints | |
| Value for money |

The AA's policies are available on the following price comparison sites:
If you're considering taking out an AA policy, it's worth checking how much it costs through different comparison sites or directly, as different amounts of commission can be charged through each, affecting the price.
If you're an AA member, you may get a discount on your insurance.
You can choose to pay your premium in one go or in monthly instalments. Paying monthly usually costs more overall. This is because paying by instalments is usually provided as a form of credit – with interest or other charges applied.
When we reviewed the AA's policies, its rate for paying in monthly instalments was 26.9% APR. This was quite a bit higher than the average rate (20.49% APR) charged among providers that told us their rates.
It might be worth considering paying annually and spreading the cost with an interest-free purchase credit card.
Above information correct as of December 2025.
The AA's customer score of 75% placed it in joint sixth (out of 12) in our customer satisfaction table – with LV slightly ahead with 76%. Its claims score, also 75%, means it landed in joint sixth place again (out of 14). Tesco Insurance scored 76%.
With a policy score of 65%, the AA's Platinum cover ranked just behind two Quote Me Happy policies – Premier and Plus with Legal – as well as Churchill's Comprehensive Plus policy, Privilege's Comprehensive Plus and the standard cover from General Accident. These each earned 66%.
The AA's Gold policy scored 63%, below Axa's Plus cover, and two policies from Admiral – Platinum and Gold.
Further down the table, the AA's Silver cover earned a policy score of 61%, just behind Admiral Essentials, a standard policy from Beam, 1st Central's Extra cover and also two Quote Me Happy policies – Plus and Plus with Roadside (all with 62%).
If you need to make a car insurance claim with the AA, call 0330 053 0322 or make a claim online.
Perhaps, if the price is competitive. The AA’s policies didn’t make much of a mark in our analysis, but if they provide the cover you need they could be worth considering.
