Esure's standard policy was in the top fifth of policies we rated.
With a score of 67%, Esure's standard policy sat just outside the top 10 (of 76) policies we reviewed.
However, it missed out on being a Best Buy because of its poor customer scores.
We were impressed by its low compulsory excesses for accidental damage (£50) and fire damage (£100), and by its no-claims discount protection add-on ‒ which shields your discount against an unlimited number of claims.
We were less impressed by the fact you had to wait 20 years before you earn its maximum no-claims discount. And if you don't use an approved repairer to fix damage, you'll pay a £200 excess.
Like a lot of policies we reviewed, Esure covers electric and hybrid vehicles, including damage to the battery, charging cable and charging adaptors.
However, Esure's policies also provide an electric or hybrid replacement for use while yours is under repair (though this is subject to availability). Only a quarter of policies we examined offer this.
Esure Flex strips away many of the features the standard policy has, such as personal belongings cover, misfuelling cover (putting the wrong fuel in your car), or cover for lost, stolen or damaged keys.
It also has higher compulsory excesses. In an accidental damage claim, you'll need to pay £250 with Flex compared to £50 with the standard policy.
The policy received a score of 51% ‒ below the standard policy's 67%, below the average of 61% and among the bottom 20% of policies we rated.
We asked Esure customers who have recently made a claim how they felt about their car insurance.
Esure scored a poor 54% when customers rated their overall experience, placing it second from bottom in our survey.
Customers were also asked to rate their most recent claim. Esure's score of 53% was even worse: 19th out of 19 companies rated.
Here's how customers rated Esure in various areas of service:

Clarity of policy | |
Dealing with queries | |
Ease of managing your policy online | |
Fair treatment of longstanding customers | - |
