Axa is one of the largest insurers in the UK, offering a range of car, home and travel insurance policies. It also owns the Swiftcover brand and is underwritten by Axa Insurance UK plc.
It offers two car insurance policies: a standard Axa car insurance and a premium policy called Axa Plus. You can purchase these direct or through comparison websites.
We've reviewed both of Axa's policies and surveyed 303 Axa customers who have claimed on its policies.
Both car insurance policies cover drivers between the ages of 21 and 81.

The Axa Plus policy scored 64%, which is higher than the average score of 62%, but not quite at our Best Buy threshold (65%).
While not exactly a distinguished performance, it ranked reasonably well in our table and did decently (scoring at least three out of five points) in most of the areas that we examined.
The good elements of the Plus policy include a no-claim limit with its windscreen cover, provided you use an approved repairer – the limit is £100 if you don’t. Repairs organised by Axa are also guaranteed for the length of time that you own the car.
In certain areas, it did less well, however. While it covers you if you accidentally fill up with the wrong type of fuel, this cover only covers the cost of draining the fuel, not any engine damage, which some policies provide. It also has a comparatively high cancellation fee of £53.
The Axa Plus policy includes £1,500 of personal belongings cover, compared with the average of £352.
Axa’s personal possessions cover includes mobile phones, laptops, tablets, handbags and sports equipment, although it doesn’t include cash or documents.
Axa’s cheaper standard alternative to Axa Plus was one of the lowest-rated policies in our analysis, with just 48%.
Among the features it leaves out are provision of a courtesy car if yours is written off and cover for lost or damaged keys. And compared with Plus’ £1,500 cover for personal belongings, car insurance offers just £150.
We asked Axa customers who have recently made a claim how they felt about their car insurance.
Axa got a customer score of 78%, which places it near the top of our customer satisfaction table (four out of 12). It scored 78% when assessed specifically for its claims service (three out of 14). The average customer and claims scores were 76% and 75%, respectively.
One satisfied Axa customer told us their claim was 'sorted out straight away', and another thought the customer service is 'very commendable'. As a policyholder clearly stated, 'it's a company that cares about its customers, and that's why their service is so top-notch'.
Here's how customers rated Axa in various areas of service:
| How comprehensive the policy cover is | |
| How affordable the policies are | |
| How thorough the application process is | |
| Clarity of policy | |
| Dealing with queries | |
| Fair treatment of long-standing customers | |

Axa policies should cost the same to buy whichever channel you buy them through (online or through a comparison website).
The above information is correct as of December 2025.
Axa's customer score of 78% placed it in 4th position in our customer satisfaction table, just behind Tesco with 79%.
Its claims score of 78% puts Axa in 3rd place in our claims satisfaction table, ahead of Esure at 77%.
Axa's Plus cover got a 64% policy score, behind two policies from 1st Central – Extra Premier and Extra + Legal – as well as Direct Line's Online cover and the AA's Platinum policy. They each scored 65%.

Perhaps: if the price is right and you’re OK with distinctly middle-of-the-road cover, Axa’s Plus policy could be a good-value option.
