Aviva is a Which? Recommended Provider and its standard policy is a Best Buy.
With a policy score of 70%, Aviva's standard policy was one of the top 10 we rated (of 76) and passed our Best Buy criteria. This policy can only be purchased directly from Aviva's website.
Like most policies, cover is provided for personal possessions stolen or damaged in the car. But unlike many policies, Aviva's cover doesn't exclude mobile phones or laptops. The standard policy can also be bought with up to £120,000 personal accident cover: £5,000 comes as standard.
The policy wasn't perfect. While lost and stolen car keys are covered, damaged keys aren't. And if you have an early change of heart about the policy and choose to cancel within the cooling-off period, you'll be charged a fee of £43.
Aviva's policies provide legal expenses cover of £100,000, which pays for legal services to help you pursue compensation if a car accident wasn't your fault. Unlike most policies, Aviva's legal cover is also available for defence costs if you're prosecuted for a motor offence committed by someone who has cloned your licence plates.
Aviva offers three policies that are only available through comparison sites: Online, Premium and Zero. These all had lower cover levels than the standard Aviva policy – with none quite earning our Best Buy rating. The best-scoring was Aviva Premium, which scored 65% in our analysis, in the top half of our table.
Its Online policy scored 62% – slightly above the average score of 61%. Meanwhile, Aviva Zero – which contributes some of your premium towards offsetting your carbon emissions – achieved 58%, placing it in the bottom half of our table, and far below the standard policy's score of 70%.
We asked Aviva customers who have recently made a claim how they felt about their car insurance.
Aviva earned a customer score of 70%, placing it third out of the 19 car insurers we received sufficient responses for in our customer survey.
Customers were also asked to rate their most recent claim. Aviva customers gave it 70% – fourth out of the 19 companies we scored.
Here's how customers rated Aviva in various areas of service:

You can't buy Aviva's standard policy through comparison websites, but you can buy Aviva Online, Aviva Premium and Aviva Zero on the following websites:
If you're insuring more than one car, the standard policy offers a 10% discount for every extra vehicle covered on the policy. There's also a 10% discount for the first year you take out the policy if you buy it in conjunction with another Aviva product.
