Dean Sobers, Which? home insurance expert, says:

MBNA’s Plus policy was in the top fifth of our table. Its buildings cover earned 74% while its contents score was 77% – just outside the top five policies rated.
However, we didn't make it a Best Buy because its underwriter (Lloyds Bank) had lower-than-average claims acceptance rates, according to the Financial Conduct Authority’s data.
It's one of only a quarter of policies that provide full accidental damage cover without you needing to add it on. It also offers one of the longer notice periods (14 days) if it cancels your policy during the term. Most other insurers are more abrupt, with the standard being seven days.
We did notice a comparatively high cancellation fee of £35 if you decide to leave before the renewal date. A third of policies don’t charge anything at all to switch mid-term.
And while it covers storms, MBNA's definition excludes rain by itself, which some other policies allow. Its terms require wind speeds of 55mph, extreme hail or snow.
The cheapest time to buy home insurance is about 26 days ahead of its start date according to data from comparison site GoCompare. It’s therefore helpful to have your current insurer’s renewal notices as early as possible.
The insurers in our survey provide their renewal notices 21-60 days in advance. MBNA’s comes 33 days before renewal. So, theoretically, if you shop around when you receive this, you’re likely to see better prices from other insurers.
MBNA’s alternative to Plus is its cheaper Essentials policy. This was roughly halfway down our tables, with scores of 70% for buildings and 66% for contents. Each was just below the average score (71% for buildings and 67% for contents).
MBNA's underwriter, Lloyds Bank General Insurance Limited, accepted 45-50% of claims on buildings-only policies – below the industry average of 62%. Some 10-15% of claimants with this type of policy lodged a complaint, which was approximately average (13%).
Meanwhile, the underwriter accepted 60-65% of claims on contents-only policies – slightly below the average of 71%. Some 5-10% of claimants complained, which is in line with the 7% average.
With claims on combined policies, the underwriter accepted 60-65% of claims – below the 71% average. Some 10-15% of claimants complained, which is also in line with the 12% industry average.
Compare MBNA quotes from several price comparison sites to check whether it's a good deal. It appears on the following comparison websites:
You won't be offered a discount if you buy buildings and contents cover together.
Want to pay monthly? You'll be happy to hear that MBNA charges no monthly interest, so if you need to split the cost, you won't be increasing the overall premium.

We didn't have enough feedback from claimants to calculate a customer score for MBNA. And, between its Plus and Essentials options, it didn't really have a standard policy as such. However, its Plus policy scored 74% for buildings cover – which would have put it in 4th place in our standard policies table – along with Silver policies from Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, plus Nationwide's Enhanced policy, and others.
For contents cover, its Plus policy earned 77%. This was the same score as Aviva's Signature policy, which ranked 1st in our standard policy table.

Maybe not. We liked what we saw with MBNA’s cover – but we can't overlook its underwriter’s claims acceptance rate.
