Dean Sobers, Which? home insurance expert, says:

John Lewis Money’s highest tier of cover is Gold, which sat comfortably in the top half of our table, with buildings and contents scores of 73% and 72%, respectively.
However, we didn't name it a Best Buy due to its underwriters’ track record on complaints. The Financial Ombudsman Service tended to rule against them at higher-than-average rates when compared with insurers more generally in its most recent data.
We liked that its Gold policy doesn’t have a cash limit for alternative accommodation cover payments (rental costs if you have to live away from home during a claim). It also offers (as an optional extra) home emergency cover with a comparatively generous £1,000 claim limit.
Areas in which it was more restrictive included a £500 claim limit for lost or stolen keys – limits of £1,000 or more are quite common. Unlike most policies, it doesn’t cover contents temporarily stored away from your home (although it does offer contents cover for students as an optional extra).
If one part of a set or suite of items are damaged, and they can’t be repaired or replaced with a match, John Lewis’ policies provide ‘matching sets’ cover – which means it will replace the whole set.
For the Gold policy, there’s no set limit for this cover. Silver is £10,000, and Bronze is £5,000.
John Lewis Money's cheaper alternatives are its Silver and Bronze policies. The former was above average for both buildings and contents cover, with scores of 72% and 69%, respectively.
Bronze sat lower in our table with scores of 68% and 66% (compared with averages of 71% and 67%).
John Lewis Money is underwritten by Axa Insurance UK plc, Covea Insurance plc, Prestige Underwriting Services Limited and Ageas Insurance Limited.
For buildings-only policies, these underwriters accepted 65-75% of claims (depending on the underwriter), above the industry average of 62%. Some 5% to 25% of claimants on these policies lodged a complaint – the average is 13%.
Meanwhile, underwriters accepted 80% to 90% of claims on contents-only policies, above the average of 71%. Some 5% to 15% of claimants complained – 7% is the average.
When it came to claims on combined policies, the underwriters accepted 75% to 85% of claims – again above the 71% average. Some 5% to 25% of claimants complained, while the industry average is 12%.

Admiral's standard Gold policy earned the same score, while standard policies from Ecclesiastical and Aviva were just above (73%).
For contents insurance, the standard policy scored 69% and ranked 11th among standard policies. Nationwide's standard policy earned the same score, and Ecclesiastical and Tesco were slightly ahead (both with 70%).

Perhaps. While its complaint track record was a bit of a concern, John Lewis’ policies ranked well in our cover analysis.
