‘Great buildings cover – shame about its claims acceptance rates’

Dean Sobers, Which? home insurance expert, says:

Dean Sobers

More Than’s Premium policy ranked among the top 10 for buildings cover in our analysis, scoring 75%. Its contents cover was slightly less impressive, scoring 71%, but it was still comfortably above the 67% average.

Despite its promising scores, More Than was let down by its underwriter’s claims-acceptance rates, which were below average.

More Than applies a proportionate reduction to your claims payout if it finds that you’ve understated the value or rebuild costs of your property while handling a claim. But to protect against this happening due to rising prices, it automatically increases your cover in line with inflation (it’s still important to check each year that your stated cover is appropriate).

It also provides trace and access cover for up to £10,000, which was comparatively generous. This covers the cost of locating leaks in or under your home.

We were less impressed by its bicycle cover. Bikes not specified on the policy are covered for up to £350. By contrast, this cover is in the thousands in lots of policies.

No payment default fee

If you miss payments, some providers will charge a fee for defaulting. More Than was one of the providers in our analysis that doesn’t charge one. Where fees were charged, they ranged from £5 to £36.

Home and Plus

More Than also offers two cheaper policies, Plus and Home. The Plus policy was above average for buildings cover with a respectable score of 74%. It earned 66% for contents cover – just below the average score of 67%.

Its more basic Home policy scored 70% for buildings and 57% for contents, placing it near the bottom of our table.

How good is More Than at handling claims?

More Than's underwriter, EUI Limited, accepted 50-55% of claims on buildings-only policies – below the industry average of 62%. Some 15-20% of claimants with this type of policy lodged a complaint, which is slightly above the average (13%).

Meanwhile, the underwriter accepted 65-70% of claims on contents-only policies – a bit below the average of 71%. Some 5-10% of claimants complained, which is in line with the 7% average.

When it came to claims on combined policies, the underwriter accepted 65-70% of claims – just below the 71% average. Some 10-15% of claimants complained, which is also in line with the 12% industry average.

How does More Than compare with other providers?

Policies from the Bank of Scotland, Halifax, Lloyds Bank, Nationwide and Quote Me Happy all matched this score.

As for contents insurance, its standard Plus policy scored 66% – the same as Saga's Select policy – and sits in joint 18th place in our standard contents cover table.

Should you buy More Than home insurance?

Probably not. More Than's Premium policy did well in our analysis of cover, but its claims performance means we can’t confidently say it’ll be there when it counts.
