Virgin's policy was let down by its buildings cover
We've reviewed Virgin Money's standard home insurance policy, which you must buy direct as it doesn't appear on price comparison websites.

‘Mediocre scores’
Dean Sobers, Which? home insurance expert, says:
Generally speaking, Virgin Money’s home insurance policy didn’t do well in our analysis. Its buildings score of 67% and contents score of 62% were both below average among the 72 policies we reviewed.
However, there were elements we liked. If you add home emergency cover, it’ll provide up to £1,500 for callouts in urgent situations such as plumbing issues. With most policies, cover ranges between £500 and £1,000.
The policy also covers contents that are temporarily stored away from the home – up to a limit of £10,000.
It was let down by its excesses. For example, when it comes to replacement locks and keys, its standard compulsory excess is £250. With the majority of policies, this was £100 or less.
Unlike most policies we looked at, it also doesn’t cover personal possessions that have been stolen from a car.
Accidental damage cover
Virgin includes some accidental damage cover without you having to pay extra. Its building insurance covers damage to fixed glass, underground pipes and cables, and sanitaryware; and its contents cover includes damage to non-portable audio visual equipment.
If you want the rest of your belongings to be protected against household accidents, you’ll need to pay extra.
How good is Virgin Money at handling claims?
Virgin Money is underwritten by Ageas, Allianz, Axa, Covea, and Integra. With buildings-only policies, these underwriters accepted 55-85% of claims (it varied by underwriter) – the industry average is 62%. Some 5-25% of claimants with this type of policy lodged a complaint – the average is 13%.
The underwriters accepted 65-85% of claims on contents-only policies – the average is 71%. Some 0-15% of claimants complained, while the average is 7%.
When it came to claims on combined policies, the underwriters accepted 65-85% of claims – the average is 71%. Some 5-25% of claimants complained – 12% is the industry average.
How can you save money on Virgin Money home insurance?
It's not as easy comparing Virgin Money home insurance quotes with those of other insurers, as it doesn't appear on comparison sites and you can only obtain its quotes over the phone or via its website.
It's still worth checking out what the competition offers through other channels, though.
You may be offered a discount if you buy your buildings and contents cover together.
Want to pay monthly? Virgin Moneycharges interest of 23.7% so you might be better off paying annually on an interest-free credit card.

How does Virgin Money compare with other providers?
While we didn't have enough feedback from claimants to calcualte a customer score for Virgin Money, its standard home insurance policy scored 67% for buildings cover – the same as Uinsure's standard policy – and ranks joint 29th in our standard buildings cover table.
As for contents insurance, Virgin Money's standard policy scored 62% and sits in joint 25th place among standard policies. Again, it earned the same score as Uinsure's contents cover.
Virgin Money home insurance: How can you claim?
The number you call if you need to make a claim depends on when you first took out your policy with Virgin Money.
If it was on or after 18 September 2024, call 0330 912 7735. For home emergencies, call 0330 912 9961.
If you first took out a policy before 18 September 2024, call 0800 197 1612. For home emergencies, call 0345 087 0046.
Probably not. Its policy scores are underwhelming and its claims and complaints performance are sub-par – there are probably better options to choose from.
How we rate home insurance
To be a Which? Recommended Provider, an insurer must:
Be regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)
Be available to the general public
Have received responses from 40 or more customers in our survey
Achieve high scores in our customer satisfaction survey
Achieve an average or higher policy score
Achieve an average or higher claims satisfaction score
Policy analysis
We analyse and rate 177 aspects of cover across insurers' policies, including their key buildings and contents features, and elements applicable to both kinds of cover (such as admin fees). We use this data to award each provider policy scores for its buildings and contents cover.
Initially, we score all of the product elements out of five, reflecting how competitive each policy is in this area compared with other insurance products. We also assess how important different policy elements are to consumers when choosing and using their home insurance, and factor this in when calculating our policy scores. More important features (such as alternative accommodation cover) will have more of an effect on the score than some other features (such as cover for the contents of your freezer).
Customer survey
We also surveyed 3,419 members of the public who had made a claim in the past two years. The survey was conducted in May-June 2026.
Our customer score reflects the general satisfaction of customers with their current insurer and their likelihood of recommending it. The claims score reflects how satisfied they were with how their most recent claim was handled and their likelihood of recommending the insurer for claims.
We review a lot of policies – and being a Best Buy recognises the individual products that stood out as being the most comprehensive in our analysis. It doesn't reflect customer service. However, we won't give a provider a Best Buy where there's evidence – from our surveys or from Financial Conduct Authority data – of poor service or a poorer-than-average record of paying claims.
Buildings Best Buy policies must have a minimum buildings policy score of 73%
Contents Best Buy policies must have a contents score of at least 70%
Additionally, we look at how consistently good the cover is in policies. To make the cut, a policy needs to have scored at least three out of five points in two thirds of the areas we've rated (find out more: how we rate policies).
Lastly, all Best Buy policies must have – or make available – the following levels of cover as a minimum:
Buildings
Flood, storm, subsidence and accidental damage cover; Cover for burst or blocked pipes; Trace and access cover (£5,000); Alternative accommodation (£50,000) with no time limit; Property owner liability (£1m); Replacement of locks or keys for external doors (£500); Home Emergency Cover (£500 and includes the central heating system).
Contents
Accidental damage cover; Theft and damage of contents in the open; Theft and damage of contents from outbuildings; Business equipment; Alternative accommodation (£15,000); Money in the home (£500); Valuables (unspecified single item limit – £2,000); Personal possessions (unspecified single item limit - £1,000); Replacement of locks or keys for external doors (£500).
