Dean Sobers, Which? home insurance expert, says:

The AA’s best-scoring policy – Platinum – was very much mid-table. Its buildings score of 71% was exactly average, while its contents score of 66% was just below the average of 67%.
It wasn’t riddled with holes, but it didn’t stand out in many areas, either. We did like that home emergency cover was included as standard (£500), as was accidental damage cover.
It lacked student cover (cover for the contents kept by a household member in student accommodation). And while it offered some cover for belongings of guests staying in your home, this was capped at £300, which was comparatively low.
The AA is one of a handful of providers in our analysis that will offer to pay towards cancellation fees you incur if you switch to them before it's time to renew.
The AA’s other two policies, Gold and Silver, has very similar buildings scores (not exactly the same but both rounded to 68%), placing them in the bottom half of our table.
Their contents cover scores differed: Gold achieved 63%, while Silver only notched up 60%.
The AA's underwriter, AA Underwriting Insurance Company Limited, accepted 55-60% of claims on buildings-only policies – just below the industry average of 63%. Some 10-15% of claimants on these policies lodged a complaint, which was approximately average (13%).
Meanwhile, the underwriter accepted 70-75% of claims on contents-only policies – in line with the average of 71%. Some 5-10% of claimants complained, which is also in line with the 7% average.
When it came to claims on combined policies, the underwriter accepted 55-60% of claims – a good bit below the 71% average. Some 10-15% of claimants complained, which is in line with the 12% industry average.

The AA will cover cancellation fees of up to £25 if you switch to one of its policies from another provider (up to £50 if you take out buildings and contents cover together).
Want to pay monthly? The AA charges interest of 22.9% APR, so you might be better off paying annually on an interest-free credit card.

While we didn't have enough feedback from claimants to calculate a customer score for the AA, its standard Gold policy scored 68% for buildings cover and ranks joint 24th in our standard buildings insurance table. It shares the same score as standard policies from 1st Central, Coverbaloo, Esure and Sheilas' Wheels.
As for contents insurance, its standard Gold policy scored 63% – the same as a standard contents policy from Hastings Direct – and sits in joint 23rd place among standard policies.

Maybe not. Its policy scores weren’t the worst, but its lower-than-average claims acceptance rates are slightly concerning.
