Halifax was originally founded as a building society in 1853. It now offers a wide range of financial products, such as home insurance, car insurance, mortgages, loans and credit cards.
We've reviewed five of its policies. You can buy three levels of cover direct from its website – Bronze, Silver and Gold. There are also two policies available only through comparison websites – Standard and Ultimate.
We've also surveyed 80 Halifax customers who have recently made a home insurance claim.

Here's how Halifax scored in our last survey.

Halifax's Silver policy – the middle of its range – was in the upper half of our table for buildings cover, with a score of 74%.
We gave its contents cover 71%, which was similarly above average. The Silver policy includes full accidental damage cover as standard – which only about a quarter of policies do.
The policy is not without faults, however. It has a relatively steep £500 excess for escape of water claims, and a fairly limited amount of cover for guests' belongings, at £500. Some policies will pay six times this amount.
If you work from home, most policies include some measure of cover for business equipment, with limits ranging from £1,000 to unlimited. Silver doesn’t cap the amount it will pay within the overall contents limit (up to £100,000).
The other two policies available direct through Halifax's website are Bronze and Gold.
Bronze was in the bottom half of our table, with scores of 69% for its buildings cover and 66% for its contents cover (compared with respective averages of 71% and 68%). In contrast to Silver, one of the significant omissions in this policy is accidental damage cover, which you can't even pay extra to add in.
Gold, meanwhile, achieved a buildings score of 74%, putting it in the top half of our table, and a similarly respectable contents score of 71% (matching that of Silver).
The two Halifax policies you'll see if you're shopping around on comparison websites are Standard and Ultimate.
Standard’s scores were exactly average – 71% for buildings cover and 68% for contents cover.
Meanwhile, Ultimate was the highest-scoring of Halifax’s policies – with 75% for buildings and 79% for contents. It was one of the 10 highest-scorers overall for contents cover and one of the most consistently high performing, earning three or more stars out of five in 93% of areas we looked at.
Unfortunately, Halifax's better-scoring policies weren't considered as Best Buys because of the company's below-average customer score and claims score (see below).
We asked Halifax customers who have recently made a claim how they felt about their home insurance.
Halifax received a customer score of 60% – 16th out of 17 providers rated, so almost at the bottom of our table. It scored 58% when we asked people to rate its claims handling – 20th out of 24 brands compared. See the list of results here.
When we asked more about the rating customers gave Halifax, one commented: 'It seemed like they were running me around in circles when it came to my claim and not communicating properly through departments, it was a lot of stress.' Another told us: 'It's not that bad, but it could be improved.'

With a customer score of 60%, Halifax only just missed being at the bottom of our table. Halifax is below LV – in 15th place with a customer score of 62%.
Its building cover for its standard Silver policy scored 74%. LV's standard policy scored 76%.
As for contents insurance, Halifax's standard policy scored 71%, just below Virgin Money's standard policy (72%).

Despite its Silver, Gold and Ultimate policies impressing us in our policy analysis, Halifax's poor scores in our customer survey means we can't recommend buying its cover.
