January sales: save hundreds with these top tech deals

The January sales are here, and our expert reviews can help you spot the gadgets worth grabbing and products to steer clear of.

We’ve scanned through the January sales pages online to pick out some discounted gadgets from Currys/PC World, John Lewis and Richer Sounds. Whether you’re shopping for a new 4K TV or a laptop for staying productive on the move, there’s no shortage of deals. Keep scrolling for the details.

The HP 15-bs might be on your radar if you’re shopping for an affordable Windows 10 laptop. This model is powered by an Intel i5 processor and 4GB of Ram, and there’s a hefty 1TB HDD on-board. It has a 15.6-inch display. Currys/PC World has chopped £200 off its usual price, so it’s available for £399 for a limited time. Over at John Lewis, a tidy £100 has been knocked off the Lenovo IdeaPad 520S, which is now £599. This 14-inch Windows 10 laptop has a seventh generation i5 processor and 8GB of Ram, and it will boot up in just twelve seconds from cold. With a specs sheet like that you’d expect this PC to cope effortlessly with multitasking, but you’ll have to see our full Lenovo Ideapad 520S review for the verdict.


For a limited time you can pick up Lenovo tablets from Currys/PC World for a discount. The Lenovo Tab 4 8 Plus is now on sale for £149.99, down from £249.99. This small, 8-inch Android tablet comes with 3GB of Ram and 16GB of storage space, and there’s a built-in fingerprint sensor for added security.

If you’d prefer a larger screen, you might be considering the 10-inch Lenovo Tab 4 10 Plus – it’s £199.99, down from £299.99. This larger model has a similar specs sheet, although you get a larger screen to enjoying films on.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 was on offer for £600, but Currys/PC World is selling it for £500 at the time of writing. It runs on the Android operating system, has a 9.7-inch display and 32GB of storage. If you want to snap some pictures while you’re out and about, there’s a 13Mp rear camera and a 5Mp front-facing camera to help out.

Tech retailer Richer Sounds is having a sale of its own, and we’ve seen a selection of TVs on offer.

The 40-inch Samsung UE40MU6120 is £339, down from £649. It features a 4K Ultra HD screen and supports high dynamic range (HDR), which aims to give brighter whites, darker blacks and more subtlety of tone in between. If you’re after a larger TV, you might have your eye on the 49-inch LG 49UJ630V. Richer Sounds has it listed for £429, which will get you a 4K Ultra-HD display, built-in Freeview Play, a Freeview HD tuner and a Freesat HD tuner. Pairing a soundbar with your TV can give your living room a blast of bass, boosting and revitalising your TV’s sound.

The Canton DM55 sound base has built-in subwoofers, and Richer Sounds has reduced the price from £329 to £249 for January. It’s suitable for TVs sized 40-inches and smaller, offering up a dedicated surround sound mode that’s aimed at film fans. If you’re on a tighter budget, Currys /PC World is selling the Samsung HW-K450 soundbar for £139, down from £299, and the LG SJ2 for £129, down from £199. They’re both wireless and connect to other devices around the home with Bluetooth, as well as boosting your TV.


As part of its January sale, Currys/PC World has lowered prices on printers from several big-name brands. The HP Envy 5546 all-in-one printer was around £120 at the end of last year, but it’s now online at a tempting £54.99. As part of the deal, the printer comes with a nine-month instant ink trial.

This model can print, copy and scan, and automatic double-sided printing will help you save paper. You can link your Apple gadgets to the printer via AirPlay for quick wireless printing. Fitness trackers

A fitness tracker is the perfect companion if you’re planning on getting fitter this year. Head over to Currys/PC World and you’ll spot the Garmin Vivosport at £129.99, a £40 saving off its usual price tag. This wearable tracks steps, heart rate, sleep and calories, and tracks your running routes thanks to built-in GPS.
