Best Black Friday TVs, laptops and other tech products

Our experts preview the tech to look out for in the sales this Black Friday

Black Friday is on the horizon, and if you’re on the lookout for a bargain there's an overwhelming array of tech deals and discounts to be found.

However, our pricing research shows that some products promoted during Black Friday can be found cheaper at other times of the year, so don't be too quick to leap on that discount.

To help you sort the deals from the duds, our experts have highlighted the biggest brands, retailers and products they expect to be available for bargain prices on Black Friday, and those you’re just as likely to find on sale all year round.

Black Friday TV deals

TVs are fairly predictable in their pricing, and Black Friday is generally a good time to buy. Most new TVs are launched between April and June and tend to reach their lowest price around eight months afterwards, which conveniently fits into the Black Friday and Christmas sales.

If you're buying a TV that will sit in your living room for years to come, take some time to research your options. Keep an eye on prices over the weeks leading up to Black Friday to help you determine whether or not a Black Friday flash deal is as good as it looks at first glance. In some cases, 'special offers' will come in the form of a slight reduction or continuation of a sale price you've already seen.

Black Friday is a great time to pick up a discounted TV, but don't rush your decision. Prices are likely to stay as low as this into the new year and beyond.

Before you explore the Black Friday sales, take a look at our expert television reviews. We've covered TVs from LG, Panasonic Samsung and Sony.

Black Friday laptop deals

Practically every big-brand retailer will have some kind of Black Friday promotion that includes laptops. These aren’t always the most exciting deals, and many are actually just regular deals repackaged as Black Friday (or Black Tag) specials.

The real surprise deals can be found at laptop brand websites. Dell in particular goes big on its Black Friday deals, with limited-stock and limited-time ‘Door Buster’ deals that sell out in a matter of minutes. If previous form is anything to go by, you’ll see four waves of deals per day over the course of the Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend, released throughout the day. Deals tend to be most impressive on higher-end Dells such as its XPS and Alienware lines, where savings of more than £300 are common.

Other brands also host their own sales during this period. Lenovo, Acer, HP and Asus have their own online stores, so it’s always worth checking each of them if there’s a specific model you’re interested in. Lenovo in particular tends to go for some huge discounts on its top-end devices, reducing the price by upwards of £400.

Unlike chief rival Apple, Microsoft also goes big on Black Friday when it comes to discounts on laptops. We’d expect some solid discounts on Microsoft Surface Laptop and Surface tablet products, as well as their associated accessories including keyboards and the Surface Pen stylus.

It’s worth bearing in mind that we’ve often found that manufacturer websites not only occasionally offer better prices than the big retailers but also have a wider range of specification options and colours.

Amazon’s popular tablet range is already cheap, but that doesn’t stop it from offering decent discounts on Black Friday. Last year we saw £50 off its Fire HD 10 tablet, and the Fire HD 8 had a healthy 40% discount.

Elsewhere, expect some sorts of deals on Apple iPads and MacBooks, although 10% is likely about the best you can hope for.

Black Friday headphones deals

If you’re tempted by the Apple AirPods, you might be in luck. Apple’s just launched the Apple AirPods Pro headphones, so there’s a likelihood that the AirPods it released earlier this year will be discounted. The original AirPods were on sale last Black Friday. You can currently buy the 2019 AirPods for around £141, but around £130 on Black Friday looks realistic.

If the AirPods aren’t your thing, another pair to consider is Sony’s XM3 over-ear wireless headphones with noise-cancelling technology. The XM3s are approaching two years old and were priced at £330 when they launched. Recently you’ve been able to pick them up for £262, so let’s see if they go any lower during Black Friday. In comparison, Bose’s Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, a rival to the XM3s, retail at around £350.

In the sub-£200 realm, look out for the Sony WH-H900N h.ear on 2 wireless NC over-ear headphones. Sony is due to release a new version of these headphones soon, so it’s likely there’ll be cuts to the original pair around Black Friday. The launch price was £250 two years ago, and recently you’ve been able to pick them up for £170-£200, so around £150 or lower would be a good deal.

Black Friday smartphone deals

Apple iPhones

Apple rarely offers significant discounts on its products, on Black Friday or at any other time of year. It may join the Black Friday furore, but it’s likely this will be in the form of a credit scheme rather than a straight-up deal – a £50 Apple Store gift card, for example.

Discounts on Apple products from retailers are more common, although again don’t tend to be as significant as other brands. Keep your eyes open for deals on slightly older Apple devices, like the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8, as these are fazed out in favour of the new designs.

Android smartphones

There are more likely to be bigger discounts on Android smartphones on Black Friday. We wouldn’t be surprised if the Galaxy S10 drops to a little under £600 Sim-free, and the Galaxy S10+ is usually about £100 more.

The Note 10 range is quite new, so you’re unlikely to see much movement here, but the older Galaxy S9 and S9+ models should now be hitting the lowest prices they’ll reach before being disappearing entirely – £400 and £500, respectively, are decent prices for these handsets.

Huawei is a brand to look out for this Black Friday. Since Google announced it would no longer be supporting new devices, prices have dropped quite considerably on older Huawei phones, so you can expect to find some relative bargains – up to or even over 50% off the original price, in the sales. Importantly, these will still be supported by Google so there won’t be any issues with not being able to access popular apps.

Consider the P20 and P20 Pro, or the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro for the biggest savings, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see some good discounts on the P30 Pro range as well.

Elsewhere it's likely that you’ll find decent discounts on quite a few other brands, including small but notable savings on the already cheap prices in the budget market. Make sure you read our guide to the best cheap mobile phones for a primer if you’re not looking to spend too much.

Black Friday wireless & Bluetooth speaker deals

There's no shortage of cut-price Bluetooth speakers on Black Friday. You’ll often find deals on speakers by Ultimate Ears, with models to look out for including the Ultimate Ears Blast and the Megablast. The Ultimate Ears Blast is almost three years old and has Alexa voice control and powerful sound, all in a compact, durable design. The Megablast is two years old and is designed to be one up from the Blast, offering even more powerful sound. You can pick up the Blast for £90 or less, which is what it went down to last Black Friday. Let’s see if the Megablast does the same in 2019.

The LG WK7 ThinQ Smart Speaker is another one you might want to keep on your shortlist. It was heavily discounted last year and can currently be purchased for £84, less than half its £200 launch price. Watch to see if it goes even lower than that.

Before you buy, check our wireless, Bluetooth and smart speaker reviews to make sure you don’t end up with a Black Friday dud.

Black Friday voice assistants deals

You can expect decent savings on most of Amazon’s Echo range – usually in the region of 30-50%. The slightly older models are more likely to see bigger drops, so make sure you check our smart speaker reviews to see which ones come out on top in our tests. Bear in mind that other retailers like Argos and Currys PC World stock products like the Amazon Echo, and often price-match Amazon at this time of year, so you’re not necessarily tied to the online retail giant.

Don't expect Google to be left behind, either. Historically, its own voice assistants have tracked Amazon's discounts quite closely on similar products, so you shouldn't miss out on a good deal if you prefer Google's dulcet tones to Alexa's.

Black Friday internet TV streaming device deals

Amazon launched the Fire TV Cube with 4K in October 2019, which combines the streaming capabilities of a Fire TV Stick with the voice assistant smarts of an Amazon Echo. We could see a small reduction on this to get buyers interested in the hybrid device. We might see a price drop on the Fire TV Sticks too.

For now, the Amazon Fire TV Stick with 2nd Gen Alexa Voice Remote costs £40 at most retailers, including Amazon. If you're not too bothered about 4K support and have been thinking about picking up a TV streaming device, then this could be a great opportunity. The 4K model is currently £50. We think that £10 off either one would be a good deal, so keep your eyes peeled.

Black Friday smartwatches and fitness tracker deals

Black Friday is often a good time to buy a wearable and there have been some pretty hefty discounts available on a range of products over the past few years.

Fitbit fitness trackers are almost always on offer around Black Friday, as are popular smartwatches like the Fitbit Versa and Fitbit Versa Lite. Deals vary and you’ll see bigger discounts on older models. You should be looking in the region of 30% or more off the original price.

Similarly, Samsung smartwatches will be discounted, although expect more off older but still perfectly capable models, such as the Gear S3 Frontier and Gear Sport, as opposed to the more recent Galaxy Watch.

You can also expect to see a bit of money off the Apple Watch 3, which has already dropped a fair bit since launch – it’s currently available for around £200, so if it drops much below this it could be worth snapping up.

While there are more bargains to be had, we’ll know closer to the time exactly which models represent the ‘real deals’, so keep an eye on Which.co.uk during the Black Friday sales to see our recommendations. In the meantime, get your research done in advance by reading our guides on how to buy the best smartwatch and whether to buy a smartwatch or a fitness tracker, so you don’t overspend on features you don’t need.

Black Friday printers deals

Unlike many other tech products, printers don't tend to change rapidly. In fact, models will often remain on sale for a number of years, so you definitely shouldn't rule out an older printer if you see one discounted in the sales. It's worth noting that Amazon is a good retailer to turn to for buying popular printers.

In the past we’ve seen Canon’s Pixma printers in the sale around Black Friday, although often they’ll be discounted at various points through the year. The Pixma 3500 will soon no longer be sold, so it’s worth looking for any final deals on this model. It’s being replaced by the Pixma 3501, so watch out for any introductory offers on that too.
