Which?Editorial team

This Canary Islands car provider is one of the top-rated car rental companies in our survey.

Which? verdict: Cicar  (Canary Islands Car) gained a customer score of 91%. Customers rave about its all-inclusive prices, yet it’s still one of the cheapest car hire companies. And there's nothing to pay up front, so it's very flexible if the pandemic disrupts your plans.

We sampled 2,282 people in January 2020 who had hired a car in the last 12 months. Sample size is in brackets. Customer score combines overall satisfaction and likelihood to recommend. A dash means not enough responses to calculate that category.

What's Cicar like?

It’s the Canary Islands car companies that seem to steal the show year on year. Once again both Cicar and Auto Reisen took the top two spots in our survey results. Both have offices in the Canary Islands’ main airports and resorts, and both offer an all-inclusive price with zero excess insurance, no deposit, a free additional driver and a fair fuel policy.

And because you pay nothing until you arrive, it's always completely free to cancel or make amendments to your booking due to Covid-19, or for any other reason.

With an impressive 91% customer score, the only thing people could find to comment negatively on was the condition of cars which were slightly ‘worn’. It scored five stars in every other category we rated.

And the likely reason that its cars are not pristine is that, unlike most car hire companies, it doesn't charge you if you ding or scratch your hire car. Cicar’s all-inclusive policy with zero excess, means you can rest easy as you drive away.

One customer put it: ‘Excellent value with no hidden extras’ whilst another said its policy is ‘every car has scratches so don’t worry’.

At an average price of just £16 per day, it’s no surprise that Cicar was one of two in our survey that received the full five stars for value for money.

Cicar seemed to go above and beyond all round, from the free audio guide to the island you’re visiting, to the great customer care. One customer said: ‘It’s by far the most trouble and worry-free car hire experience available and also at very fair and competitive prices.’

Should I book with Cicar?

Cicar is a blueprint for how other car rental companies should behave, and we have no hesitation in recommending it. And its free cancellation policy is even more attractive during the pandemic.
