Spanish operator Goldcar, owned by French giant Europcar, has a large branch network in its home country, as well as offices at locations across Europe.
Which? verdict: Goldcar sorely disappoints, especially on customer service. Steer well clear.

We sampled 2,282 Which? members in January 2020, a further 843 in January 2021, and a further 657 in 2022. Sample size is in brackets. Customer score combines overall satisfaction and likelihood to recommend. A dash means not enough responses to calculate that category. |
When car hire headline prices are very cheap, but the company only gets two stars for value for money, something is seriously wrong.
A third of people told us they received unexpected or unexplained charges from Goldcar. The complaint from one customer that ‘after returning home, I checked my statement and saw a charge for €225’, is too familiar.
Then of course there’s the frequently noted pressure selling with one commenting ‘they hard sell additional insurance giving the most ludicrous reasons why you need it.’
You can watch our undercover video of Goldcar bullying customers into buying additional insurance.
And don't think you can complain if things go wrong. As one reader said: ‘Trying to contact it is a joke.’ Hence the one-star customer service rating.
Its terrible customer service and few redeeming qualities make Goldcar an absolute no-no. Instead hire with one of our Which? Recommended car hire companies
