| Car hire company | Which? Recommended Provider | Overall score |

| Hertz | No | 65% |
Overall score is a combination of the customer score (overall satisfaction and how likely people are to recommend the company) and our own expert analysis. Survey carried out in Feb/March 2026.
What’s Hertz like?
While 65% isn’t a terrible score, it does place Hertz joint fourth from bottom in our table. That means, regardless of where you’re travelling to and how much you want to spend, you’ll likely find a better option.
One issue reported in our survey was collection speed, where it got an average three stars. Slow service at the rental desk can be an indicator that customers are facing poor customer service, or sometimes the hard sell on extras, and that’s certainly borne out by our survey. When we quizzed customers who had bought additional insurance at Hertz’s rental desk, a whopping 40% said they felt under ‘a lot’ of pressure to buy. Another 37% said they felt under ‘a little’ pressure. So most customers spent time being asked to buy insurance.
One customer told us: ‘All the staff are interested in is trying to get you to upgrade to a larger car, or selling you extra insurance.’
In our expert checks of the Hertz T&Cs, it was often difficult to find a comprehensive final hire price. For example, we couldn’t add an additional driver during the booking process, nor was a price listed in the ‘rental conditions’. When we asked Hertz about this, it told us we could find the fee by clicking another link, qualifications and requirements, but as the cost turned out to be an extra £144 per week, we think this should be clearer, and added to the price you pay when you book.
Should I book with Hertz?
No. Our experts rated it poorly on transparency, meaning it is hard to find the final price when booking, while some customers reported being brow-beaten into buying extras at the desk. If you want the reassurance of a big name, try Alamo instead.
