How do I find the best contents insurance? 

Finding the best contents insurance policy can be tough - the cheapest deal may not always provide the cover you need should the worst happen and you're forced to make a claim. 

Which? experts scrutinise 35 home insurers’ contents insurance policies, and survey thousands of contents insurance policyholders. We've rated each policy on its key aspects to produce a Which? policy score.

What makes a Which? Recommended Provider?

 

To qualify as a Which? Recommended Provider, an insurer must: 

  • Be regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority 
  • Be available to the general public 
  • Have received responses from 30 or more customers in our customer survey 
  • Must achieve a high scores in our Customer Satisfaction survey. 
  • Must also achieve an average or above Policy Scores for Buildings and Contents

How we analyse contents insurance policies

We analyse and rate 67 key elements of contents insurance policies to come up with the overall policy score. We assess how important each individual element is to people when choosing and using a contents insurance policy and weight it accordingly when calculating our total policy score.

Initially, we score all of the product elements out of five, reflecting how competitive each provider is in this area compared with other insurers. Weightings are then applied to the higher and lower element scores to enhance / reduce their impact in the overall product score.
