NFU Mutual is a mutual society which dates back to 1910 when seven local farmers established the Midlands Farmers Mutual Insurance Society Ltd.
A mutual society (or mutual) is owned and democratically elected by its members and usually, aim to benefit members or the community. There are more than 10,000 mutuals in the UK including buildings societies and credit unions.
NFU Mutual offers a range of products including home insurance, car insurance, Isas and Sipps. When it comes to insurance, however, NFU Mutual doesn't cover all risks and postcodes - particularly those in major cities.

NFU Mutual’s home insurance policy: is it good or bad?
In February 2019, we analysed and rated 60 of the most important elements of standard home insurance policies to come up with the overall policy score.
We assess how important each individual element is when choosing and using a home insurance policy, and weight it accordingly when calculating our total policy score. Each element is given a star rating, out of five.
Overall, 57 out of the 60 elements policy elements we analysed in NFU Mutual's home insurance earned a 3-star rating or higher.
A massive 34 of NFU Mutual's policy elements were given a full 5-star rating, while only 16 received a 3-star rating, which indicates an above average level of cover.

When you call you'll be asked for details about what happened and when it happened as well as any action you've taken so far.
NFU Mutual will also ask what you're claiming for and the approximate cost involved.
The acid test of any home insurance provider is how it handles your claim. In January 2019, Which? surveyed 1,456 members of the general public about their experiences using a major home insurance provider.
NFU Mutual scored 92%, placing it 1st out of 21 home insurers. It scored five stars for 'customer service', and 'settlement value'. Customers gave 'how they communicate on claim progress' and 'speed of dealing with a claim' four stars out of five.
