Of Axa’s three products, its mid-range Plus policy managed poorer-than-average scores for both buildings and contents – 69% and 60%.
Some areas in which it did well were its personal possessions cover for mobile phones, which will pay out up to £1,500 if your phone is stolen or destroyed, so it should adequately cover more premium devices.
The policy also covers the theft or damage of garden furniture for up to £3,000.
However, an area where it falls short – compared to many products – is its cover limit for unspecified (undeclared) individual items under contents cover. The limit per item is £1,500 – about half the average amount.
It also doesn’t cover guests’ belongings, which most policies do.
If you own one or more bicycles, these will be covered as standard under Axa's policy.
The cover is £350 per bicycle up to £1,500 in total (you can increase these amounts by specifying the bicycle). It’s covered in the house, in outbuildings (such as a garage) and also away from the home.
Either side of Plus in Axa's range were Premier and Home. Premier – achieved the highest score we gave for a buildings policy (85%) and is a Best Buy in that area. Notably, it covers accidental damage as standard – which only 27% of policies we examined do. Its contents cover, meanwhile, was exactly average, earning 68%.
Axa's budget-focused 'Home' policy got scores of 69% for buildings and 57% for cover, both below average.
We asked Axa customers who have recently made a claim how they felt about their home insurance.
Axa received a customer score of 73% - in the top five of our table. It was rated highly on its claims handling – 4th out of 24 with a score of 71%. See the list of results here.
When asked why they rated Axa highly, one customer said they 'handled my claim very quickly', while another told us: 'Axa policies are easy to understand and very straightforward'. They added: 'Axa prioritises customers' interest above profit.'

With a customer score of 73%, Axa came just below Which? Recommended Provider Tesco in our table.

For the contents cover, Axa's standard policy scored 60%, below a standard policy from MBNA, which scored 61%.

We had some reservations about the extent of cover in AXA's Home and Home Plus policies, but are fans of its Premier policy – particularly its buildings cover, for which it is a Which? Best Buy.
This, plus Axa's reasonably high placings in our customer tables, makes it well worth considering.
