What does Direct Line offer?

Launched in 1985, Direct Line offers insurance for cats, dogs and horses - this review specifically looks at its cat and dog policies. Its underwriter is UK Insurance.

By default, Direct Line policies won't cover pre-existing medical conditions - although if you declare any when taking out the cover, the insurer may agree to cover some on a case-by-case basis.

 Non-lifetime cover is less comprehensive, covers a limited time period and excludes certain conditions after you hit your claims limit.

How we analyse pet insurance

 

We analyse and rate 21 elements of cat insurance policies and 24 elements of dog insurance policies -  plus how much each pays in vets fees - to come up with the overall policy score.

Different policy elements are enhanced or reduced within the policy score, to reflect the relative importance of each. For example, the amount a policy pays for vets fees and how this money is made available counts for more in the score than the amount provided for holiday cancellation.

To determine the customer score, we surveyed 1,342 Which? members who own a pet insurance policy in November 2021. The customer score reflects the overall satisfaction of the brand's customers in our survey and their likelihood of recommending the provider. We also surveyed 784 members that had made a claim within the last five years. The claims score reflects the customers' satisfaction and likelihood to recommend their provider based on their most recent claim.
