Hellmann’s, Aldi or Lidl mayonnaise? Find out which is best

We pitted the top mayonnaise brand, Hellmann's, against the cheapest two on sale, Lidl's Batts and Aldi's Bramwells, in a blind taste-test

Lidl Batts Real Mayonnaise, Hellmann's Real Mayonnaise, Aldi Bramwells Real mayonnaise

Looking for the best mayonnaise for a summer barbecue?

We pitted the top brand, Hellmann’s, against the cheapest two on sale, from Lidl and Aldi, in a blind taste-test.

For our tasting we asked 50 people to judge Hellmann’s, Lidl’s Batts and Aldi’s Bramwells mayonnaise on taste, appearance, aroma, creaminess and thickness.

Hellmann’s mayonnaise beat the budget choices from Aldi and Lidl, but it’s also four times the price.

Hellmann’s mayonnaise tops for taste

Nearly one in three tasters liked Lidl’s mayonnaise best, praising its texture and flavour. It scored 65% (69p, 501ml).

But it was just beaten by Hellmann’s (70%, £2.50, 430ml), which was found to have a slightly stronger taste, a more appealing look and just the right thickness. Just over half liked it best.

Aldi’s mayonnaise finished third, scoring 61% (69p, 500ml).

However, with Hellman’s costing up to four times as much per 100ml, it may be worth doing your own test.

Prices correct as at 18 June 2019, excluding special offers on different sizes. Research carried out by consumer research specialists Wirral Sensory Services.
