Thomas Cook, First Choice and Tui rated worst package holiday providers

Big-name providers fall short for sun, sea and sand in Which? Travel survey

Three of the biggest names in traditional beach and poolside package travel received the lowest customer scores in a Which? Travel survey of package holiday providers.

The survey of more than 5,000 Which? readers' holiday experiences gave Thomas Cook a mediocre customer score of 65%, First Choice a score of 74% and Tui (formerly Thomson) a score of 75%. While none of these customer scores is terrible, the big three were beaten by all of the other contenders, with the top-performing company in the survey receiving a customer score of 93%.

And you don't have to pay a fortune to book with one of the better package holiday providers. One of the best-rated companies in our survey also had some of the cheapest priced holidays. So you'll pay less and have a better holiday.

Don't Thomas Cook it

Languishing right at the bottom of the table is mass tourism pioneer Thomas Cook. While it offers the cheapest average price per day for package holidays (£79 for short haul, and £100 for long haul), customers gave it a mediocre three-star value for money rating.

Customers also rated Thomas Cook just three out of five stars for the 'organisation of the holiday'. They told Which? that communication was difficult and that reps on hand in the resorts were a rarity.

And with a three-star rating for 'Description matching reality', customers reported that their experience often failed to match the enticing brochure blurb that had reeled them in.

Not your First Choice

Both First Choice and Tui are part of Tui Group - one of the largest tourism operators in the world. But with a further seven package holiday companies above them in the table, there are far better options out there for sunseekers.

And with an average price per day of £89 for short-haul holidays, the survey found Tui to be more expensive than some other top-performing companies.
