General Accident’s car insurance cover earned 66% in our analysis, placing it comfortably in the upper half of our table and getting our Best Buy recommendation.
Areas in which the policy did well included onward travel cover. You’re covered for transport to your destination if you’re involved in an accident en route and can’t complete the trip yourself.
It also guarantees repairs it arranges for the lifetime of the car.
While it succeeded more often than it failed in our analysis, there were some areas where we weren’t quite as impressed.
Only the main driver can build no-claims discount on the policy. In some policies, other drivers – such as the main driver’s spouse – can also earn this.
It also has a comparatively low level of cover for personal belongings in the car, at just £150. The average policy we reviewed provided £351.
A subtle way insurance policies can offer less than they seem to is when it comes to compulsory excesses, which have the effect of making low-cost claims counterproductive.
General Accident’s policy was one of just 11% that did not impose a mandatory excess for accidental damage claims. You can select your own to help bring down the premium.
General Accident’s underwriter Aviva Insurance Limited accepted 95% to 100% of car insurance claims in 2024. This was around the average (98.8%) for the market.
Of customers who claimed, 0% to 5% made a complaint, which is below the average (6.9%).
You can buy a General Accident policy directly from its website, or from the following comparison websites:
Car insurance policies are generally cheaper to buy through comparison websites than directly online, but it's always a good idea to compare all prices.
General Accident doesn't offer a discount if you buy a policy for more than one car or if you buy joint car and home insurance.
The above information is correct as of December 2025.
With a policy score of 66%, General Accident's Best Buy car insurance sits just behind policies from three providers – Allianz, Direct Line, Moja – that all scored 67%.
