'A mediocre policy with the odd highlight'

Dean Sobers, Which? car insurance expert, says:

People’s Choice's car insurance policy scored 60% – below the 62% average.

As with many mid-table policies, it was a bit of a mixed bag. On the plus side, it offers £5,000 of personal accident cover, which you can pay to extend up to £100,000. Personal accident cover pays out a cash lump sum if you die or suffer serious injury in a car accident.

And if you choose its hire car cover, you’ll get use of a temporary replacement vehicle for up to 28 days if yours is stolen or written off.

Areas in which it did less well included comparatively low levels of cover for personal belongings in your car - £300 (the average was £351). This also excludes items such as gadgets and phones.

The policy also doesn’t cover damage caused by accidentally using the wrong fuel in your car.

Key cover

If your keys are stolen, People's Choice includes £500 cover as standard to replace them and the locks in your car.

You can pay extra to add expanded key cover, which will pay up to £1,500 and covers costs resulting from your keys being lost, stolen or damaged.

How good is People's Choice at handling claims?

Advantage Insurance Company Limited, the underwriter of People’s Choice, accepted 95-100% of car insurance claims in 2024. This was around the average (98.8%) for the market.

Of customers who claimed, 5-10% made a complaint, which is also about average (6.9%).

How can you save money on People's Choice car insurance?

You can buy the standard People's Choice car insurance policy directly from its website, or from the following comparison websites:

  • Compare the Market
  • Confused.com
  • Go.Compare
  • MoneySuperMarket
  • QuoteZone

Car insurance policies are generally cheaper to buy through comparison websites than directly online, but it's always a good idea to compare prices to see what's the best offer.

People's Choice doesn't give a discount if you buy a policy for more than one car. It may, however, be willing to offer additional discounts if you contact it at renewal to discuss what it can offer.

Want to pay monthly?

You can choose to pay your premium in one go or in monthly instalments. Paying monthly usually costs more overall. This is because paying by instalments is usually provided as a form of credit, with interest or other charges applied.

When we reviewed the People's Choice policy, its rate for paying in monthly instalments was 22.8% APR. This was more than the average rate (20.49% APR) charged among providers that told us their rates.

Instead, why not consider paying annually and spreading the cost with an interest-free purchase credit card?

The above information is correct as of December 2025.

How does People's Choice compare with other providers?

With a policy score of 60%, the standard cover from People's Choice sits behind several policies in our table – Privilege Comprehensive, Sheilas' Wheels Essentials, 1st Central Extra + Breakdown and the AA's Silver cover. They all earned 61%.

Should you buy People's Choice car insurance?

Possibly. The policy could be compelling if it’s available cheaply and you’re happy with what it offers – but we think there are more comprehensive alternatives to choose from.
