Tesco's home insurance is underwritten by Tesco Underwriting Ltd, and sells policies directly and via comparison websites.

It offers one home insurance policy called Standard Home Insurance, which we've reviewed. We've also surveyed 50 Tesco customers who have recently made a home insurance claim.

‘A solid performer which stands out in a flood’

Dean Sobers, Which? home insurance expert, says:

Dean Sobers

Tesco scored 71% for its buildings cover and 70% for its contents cover – which compares to average scores of 71% and 68%, respectively. This made it a mid-table performer.

While its levels of cover didn’t leap out of our analysis, it was generally decent. It scored at least three out of five points in most areas we assessed, and there were some highlights, too.

Unlike many policies, Tesco’s cover comes with some accidental damage cover as standard. This protects against breakages to items such as fixed ceramic or glass surfaces and your home entertainment system – without you having to pay more to add this cover on. You can then choose to include more accidental damage cover for other possessions or fixtures.

There were still some areas where it was lacking. Its contents policy doesn’t cover damage caused by domestic pets, for example. And its storm damage cover – while generally impressive – doesn’t cover fences, gates and hedges, or fixed items in the open (such as hot tubs).

Flood cover

There are lots of potential types of 'flood'. Tesco’s policy takes the time to explain in its wording what it means by 'flood', along with about a third of other policies we examined. This makes it less cryptic than other insurers on this crucial feature of home insurance.

And following a Which? report into insurers’ language, Tesco recently made its definition of flooding more generous – removing a stipulation that the water must have entered the property ‘sudden[ly]’ to count.

Tesco’s policy was also among a quarter of those we analysed that covers damage caused by groundwater flooding – whether it’s built up rapidly or gradually.

How did customers rate Tesco's home insurance?

We asked Tesco customers who have recently made a claim how they felt about their home insurance.

Tesco received a customer score of 75%, placing it close to the top of our table. It was even more impressive when rated on its claims handling – coming second out of 24 with a score of 76%. See the list of results here.

When asked why they'd rated Tesco highly, one customer summarised: 'Affordable premium, transparent policies, excellent customer service.' Another, who'd rated the insurer highly for its claims handling, explained that following a burglary, Tesco staff had 'talked me through how to claim online. It was an easy process and quick.'

How does Tesco compare with other providers?

With a customer score of 75%, Tesco came just below HSBC in our table, which ranked third with 78%.

It drew with Halifax's standard policy with its buildings cover – which we also awarded 71%. Aviva's and M&S's standard policies were just ahead in our table – each with 72%.

Regarding contents cover, it shared a score of 70% with Lemonade's standard policy. Both were just behind Bank of Scotland, Coverbaloo, Halifax, and Lloyds, which received scores of 71% for their standard policies.

How can I claim?

The contact number to make a claim is 0345 677 7222. If you need to call about a home emergency, the claims line for this service is 0330 123 1963.

Should you buy Tesco home insurance?

On paper, Tesco's cover wasn't the most exceptional policy we reviewed – but excellent feedback in our survey suggests it's doing well by customers who have genuinely put it to the test.

Claimants praised its customer service, claims handling and affordability, earning it our Which? Recommended Provider status.

However, it won't be the perfect fit for everyone and, as with any insurance, you'll need to check the cover against your personal requirements before committing to a purchase.

If you need particularly high levels of cover, you might want to consider some of our Best Buys or our other Which? Recommended Provider, NFU Mutual.
