NFU Mutual car insurance review

NFU Mutual offers car insurance, home insurance and landlord insurance.

While the car insurance policy offered by NFU Mutual is available to the general public, it doesn't cover all risk profiles and postcodes (particularly in major cities).

NFU Mutual says it prioritises the personal touch; it doesn't sell policies online, but you can buy over the phone or visit one of its 280 local branches, known as 'agencies'.

It underwrites its own policies and will insure drivers between 17 and 80 years old.

How good is NFU Mutual's car insurance policy?

NFU Mutual is a Which? Recommended Provider and its policy is a Which? Best Buy.

With a policy score of 75%, NFUM's policy ranked 5th out of 76 policies we scored.

Its policy is the only one we've rated that doesn't charge interest or fees for paying monthly. And - unlike three quarters of other policies - it comes with motor legal protection as standard. You can claim on motor legal protection to pursue third parties for costs they're liable for but which aren't covered under the main insurance - for example, excesses. 

Meanwhile, NFUM's misfuelling cover - which you can claim on if you've put the wrong type of fuel into the tank - pays for the costs of both draining fuel from the tank and repairing any damage to the engine. Misfuelling cover on the vast majority of policies will only pay for one or the other.

No policy does everything. NFUM will lend you a car for up to 14 days while you replace your car, if it was damaged beyond repair. Some policies lay on cover for up to a month.

You'll also lose no-claims discount if your car is vandalised or damaged while parked and the person responsible can't be found.

Saving money when taking out a premium with NFU Mutual will require some work as it's not on comparison websites. Its policies can only be bought over the phone.

Nor does it offer any of the following types of discount: multi-car discount, joint car and home discount, dash-cam or membership discounts.

You're best off using comparison sites to find quotes from other car insurers before getting in touch with NFU Mutual.
