Aviva is one of the five largest UK car insurers and also offers home, travel and life insurance.

Its car insurance brands include Aviva, General Accident and Quote Me Happy, all underwritten by Aviva Insurance Limited. 

If you visit the Aviva website, you can only buy its Signature car insurance policy. But Aviva Platinum, Aviva Gold, Aviva Zero and Aviva Zero Essentials are also available via comparison websites. We've reviewed all five Aviva car insurance policies. Plus, we surveyed 598 Aviva customers who've claimed on its policies.

Aviva Signature policy offers cover for drivers aged between 17 and 84. Its Platinum and Gold cover is for those aged between 18 and 84, and the Zero and Zero Essentials policies are for drivers over 21 years and under 80.

'A handful of Best Buy options'

Dean Sobers, Which? car insurance expert, says:

Three of Aviva’s five policies – Platinum, Gold and Signature – were Best Buys in our analysis. Added to its excellent customer feedback, this earned Aviva our Which? Recommended Provider endorsement.

Its Platinum policy (formerly known as Premium) was Aviva’s top-scoring policy, earning 70%. This placed it among the top five policies assessed overall, out of 66. Platinum – which is exclusively available on comparison websites – guarantees the repairs it organises for the vehicle’s lifetime. It also covers lost and stolen keys as standard. This includes costs for changing the locks and replacing the keys.  

Like every other policy, it wasn’t entirely perfect. It doesn’t cover repair or replacement of damaged keys, for example. It also doesn’t cover medical expenses (such as prescription costs or dental or optician fees), which the majority of policies do.

Nonetheless, the policy did well in most areas, scoring at least three out of five stars in 69% of the areas of cover we examined. 

Guaranteed courtesy car

Some 91% of policies we examined provide a courtesy car for you to use while yours is being repaired – at least in theory. 

Not all guarantee that a courtesy car will actually be available when you need it. With some policies, this assurance can be purchased as an optional extra.

With Aviva’s Platinum and Gold policies, a guaranteed courtesy car comes as standard.

Gold, Signature, Zero and Zero Essentials

We also reviewed Aviva Gold, which is also available via comparison websites. This also scored 70%. 

Signature, meanwhile, can only be bought directly from Aviva’s website. This was still highly impressive, in the top 20% of policies rated.

Aviva also offers Zero and Zero Essentials. Sold on comparison websites, these policies pay to offset the carbon emissions from your driving. 

The first 1,000 miles of your driving are offset automatically. If you choose to pay to offset 50% of the rest of your emissions for the year, Aviva will match the remainder.

You might find this a valuable benefit, but unfortunately, we didn’t think much of the cover in and of itself. Zero scored 57%, which is below the average score of 62%. Zero Essentials earned 52%, placing it in the bottom fifth of our table.    

How did customers rate Aviva's car insurance?

We asked Aviva customers who've recently made a claim how they felt about their car insurance.

Aviva earned an impressive customer score of 81% and sits at the top of our customer satisfaction table alongside the RAC. It scored 80% when assessed specifically for its claims service (2nd out of 14). The average customer score was 76%; the claims score was 75%.

One customer gave Aviva high praise, stating: 'They are exceptional at what they do.' Others agreed, saying Aviva is a 'good honest company' and they have a 'quick claim settlement process'.

How can you save money on Aviva car insurance?

You can only buy Aviva's standard Signature policy direct, but you can buy Platinum, Gold, Zero and Zero Essentials on the following websites:

  • Mustard.

If you're insuring more than one car, the Signature cover offers a 10% discount for every extra vehicle covered on the policy. There's also a 10% discount on the first year's premium if you buy the policy in conjunction with home insurance.

How does Aviva compare with other providers?

Aviva's customer score of 81% means it takes the top spot in our customer satisfaction table alongside the RAC. The next best is Tesco with a customer score of 79%.

 Aviva's claims score of 80% landed it in 2nd place in the claims satisfaction table – just behind the RAC, which scored 83%, and above Axa, which scored 78%. 

With policy scores of 70%, Aviva's Platinum and Gold cover were pipped by standard policies from LV and NFU Mutual. They both scored 70%. 

Its Signature policy scored 68%, behind standard policies from Esure, Saga and Sheilas' Wheels and premium policies from Allianz and Direct Line. These each earned 69%.
