You'll need to be 50 or over to qualify for car insurance with Saga, as it specialises in cover for older drivers. Named drivers will need to be at least 45 years old. There's no upper age limit.

As well as car insurance, Saga also offers home insurance and travel insurance. You can purchase its policies direct. Only Saga Standard can be bought through comparison websites.

We've reviewed three Saga car insurance policies: its premium Saga Plus cover, its Saga Select policy and the Saga Standard policy. We didn't receive feedback from enough customers to rate its levels of service.

Saga's policies are underwritten by a panel including Acromas, Ageas Axa, Allianz, Covea and Sabre.

'Three out of three for Saga's impressive policies'

Dean Sobers, Which? car insurance expert, says:

Saga's policies were all high scorers in our analysis. In terms of their cover, all were in the top 20% of policies we examined, and Best Buys.

With a score of 77%, Saga’s Plus policy was the best-performing of any car insurance policy from any insurer.

It has one of the highest levels of personal accident cover – you can pick between £5,000 and £150,000. And unlike many policies, no-claims discount protection comes as standard. This means that in any three-year period, the first two claims you make won't have an effect on your no-claims discount.

On the downside, you're charged a £30 fee for renewing each year, and it also has a reasonably steep £50 cancellation fee if you switch after the cooling-off period.

Two-year fixed price

With its Plus policy, Saga will keep your premium fixed for two years. Specifically, this means that, provided you haven’t made a claim or changed your policy over the first year, Saga won’t raise your price in the second year.

There are certain exemptions to this – for example, if you or a driver on the policy is convicted of a motoring offence.

Saga Select and Saga Standard

Saga’s Select policy offers reduced cover levels compared to Plus and no fixed price pledge, but it was still a top performer in our analysis. It ranked 2nd out of 66 with a score of 75%.

Meanwhile, Saga’s Standard policy was, despite being its most basic offering, among the top 10 in our analysis, scoring 69%.

How good is Saga at handling claims?

Saga’s panel of underwriters – including Acromas, Ageas Axa, Allianz, Covea and Sabre – accepted 95-100% of car insurance claims in 2024. This was around the average (98.8%) for the market.

Of customers who claimed via Ageas, Covea and Sabre, 0-5% made a complaint, which is below average (6.9%). Of those who claimed via Acromas, 5-10% made a complaint. And of those who claimed through Axa, 15-20% made a complaint – significantly above average.

How can you save money on Saga car insurance?

Saga Plus and Saga Select policies are only available directly, but Saga Standard cover can also be bought via these comparison websites:

  • Compare the Market
  • Confused.com
  • GoCompare
  • MoneySuperMarket.

Saga doesn't charge more if you take out your policy over the phone rather than via its website. And the prices for its Standard policy shouldn't vary whether you buy it directly or through a comparison site.

It offers discounts of up to 10% if you insure multiple vehicles on the policy (known as multi-car insurance).

And if you want to know how much you'll be paying two years down the line, Saga's Plus policy comes with a three-year fixed price guarantee.

Want to pay monthly?

You can choose to pay your premium in one go or in monthly instalments. Paying monthly usually costs more overall. This is because paying by instalments is usually provided as a form of credit – with interest or other charges applied.

When we reviewed Saga's policies, its rate for paying in monthly instalments was 24% APR. This was higher than the average rate (20.49% APR) charged among providers that told us their rates.

You may instead want to consider paying annually and spreading the cost with an interest-free purchase credit card.

Above information correct as of December 2025.

How does Saga compare with other providers?

With a policy score of 77%, Saga Plus sits at the top of our table, and the Saga Select policy follows closely behind (in second spot) with 75%.

Saga Standard earned a 69% policy score – Aviva's Premium and Online policies were that little bit better with a score of 70%.
