Saga's policies were all high scorers in our analysis.
Its Select car insurance policy - in the middle of its range - was one of the most impressive policies we reviewed, ranking fourth out of 76 policies in our analysis with a score of 76%.
Unfortunately, it and Saga's other policies missed out on Best Buy status because of lacklustre scores in our customer survey.
Saga Select was one of the most consistently high-scoring policies in our analysis - earning at least three out of five points in 60 of the 79 areas of cover we rated.
It boasts one of the highest levels of personal accident cover - you can pick between £5,000 and £150,000. And unlike many policies, no-claims discount protection comes as standard. This means that in any three-year period, the first two claims you make won't have an effect on your no-claims discount.
On the downside, you're charged a £30 fee for renewing each year, and it also has a reasonably steep £50 cancellation fee if you switch after the cooling-off period.
A 'key protection' feature comes as an add-on with Saga's Select policy and its more basic Standard policy - but as a standard part of its more comprehensive Plus policy. You can claim if your keys are lost, stolen or damaged - or if they're locked inside a car, a property or stuck in a lock.
This has a limit of £2,500 – including £250 for wear and tear – and claims made won't incur excesses or affect your policy's no-claims discount.
Without this feature, you can claim for loss and theft of your keys, but your policy's no-claims discount will take a hit. And wear and tear isn't covered.
Saga's most basic offering - 'Standard' - still received a high 68% score in our analysis – one of the top 10 highest-scoring policies among the 76 we rated.
Meanwhile, its premium Plus policy was joint first in our analysis of cover, with a score of 77%.
The Plus policy comes with Saga's 'three-year fixed price' promise, which freezes your premium for three years unless you make a claim or your level of risk changes.
We asked Saga customers who have recently made a claim how they felt about their car insurance.
Saga's car insurance earned an underwhelming 60% customer score, placing it 15th out of 19 providers. This compared with an average of 66%.
When we asked customers to rate their most recent claim, Saga received 62% - below the average of 66% and joint 12th in a table of 19 insurers.
Here's how customers rated Saga for various areas of service:

Ease of managing your policy online | |

Saga's Plus and Premium policies are only available directly, but its Standard cover can also be bought via these comparison websites:
Saga doesn't charge more if you take out your policy over the phone rather than via its website, and the prices for its Standard policy shouldn't vary depending on whether you've bought it directly or through a comparison site.
It offers discounts of up to 10% if you insure multiple vehicles on the policy (known as multi-car insurance).
And if you want to know how much you'll be paying two years down the line, Saga's Plus policy comes with a three-year fixed price guarantee.
The above information is correct as of December 2024.

Saga sits near the bottom of our rankings for customer experience, with a customer score of 60% and a claims score of 62%.
However, its Saga Plus policy stands out with a high policy score of 76%, placing it just behind LV and Allianz, which both score 77% and are rated Best Buys.
While Saga performs less strongly in service and claims, its policy score is among the highest in our table.

Why is Saga car insurance so expensive?
Car insurers offer 'personalised pricing': each customer pays a different premium depending on the insurer's interest in competing for their custom and its view of their level of risk. An insurer that's offering comparatively cheap quotes to one driver might be exorbitantly expensive for another. The only way to ensure you're getting the best possible deal is to shop around.
Can I renew my Saga insurance online?
Yes, you can renew your policy on Saga's website.
