Sheilas' Wheels entered the car insurance market in 2005, with policies primarily aimed at female drivers. However, it now sells to all drivers. You can buy its policies direct or through comparison websites.

It's part of the Esure group, along with insurance brands Esure and First Alternative. Policies are underwritten by Esure Insurance Ltd.

We've reviewed two car insurance polices from Sheilas' Wheels: its standard cover and also a more basic Essentials policy. We didn't receive feedback from enough customers to rate its levels of service.

Both policies cover drivers aged between 18 and 90.

'Sheilas' Wheels policies held their own in our analysis'

Dean Sobers, Which? car insurance expert, says:

Sheilas’ Wheels’ standard policy was in the top fifth of the 66 policies rated, with a score of 68%.

However, we didn’t name it a Best Buy because when we assessed it, the Financial Ombudsman Service had upheld a high number of complaints against its underwriter.

This said, areas in which it performed well include £5,000 personal accident cover as standard. This is a cash sum that's paid if you suffer a life-changing injury as a result of a car accident.

You'll also not lose your no-claims discount if you claim because your car has been vandalised.

It didn't do brilliantly across the board, though. An example of an area in which it fell short was the low provision for personal belongings (£200) and just £100 cover to replace a damaged car seat.

No-claims discount protection

Sheilas' Wheels' no-claims discount protection (NCDP) covers an unlimited number of claims a year.

Most car insurers offer NCDP for an extra charge. As the name suggests, this will shield your no-claims discount against some of your claims – reducing the effect claiming will have on your renewal price (although, importantly, it won't stop claims from affecting your price altogether).

Essentials

As an alternative to its standard cover, Sheilas’ Wheels offers an Essentials policy, which has some higher excesses and lacks features such as driving other cars cover and driving overseas cover.

We gave it a score of 61%, which was very close to the average score of 62%.

How good is Sheilas' Wheels at handling claims?

Esure Insurance Limited underwrites for Sheilas' Wheels and accepted 95% to 100% of car insurance claims in 2024. This was around the market average (98.8%).

Of customers who claimed, 5% to 10% made a complaint, which is also about average (6.9%).

How can you save money on Sheilas' Wheels car insurance?

Sheilas' Wheels' car insurance policy is available on the following price comparison websites:

  • Compare the Market
  • Confused.com
  • Go.Compare
  • MoneySuperMarket

In general, car insurance policies are cheaper to buy through comparison websites than directly online, and are priciest when bought over the phone. It's always worth doing some research and comparing quotes.

You should be charged the same price regardless of which comparison site you use or if you purchase it directly.

Sheilas' Wheels offers a multi-car discount if you insure more than one vehicle under its policy.

Want to pay monthly?

You can choose to pay your premium in one go or in monthly instalments. Paying monthly usually costs more overall. This is because paying by instalments is usually provided as a form of credit, with interest or other charges applied.

When we reviewed the policies from Sheilas' Wheels, its rate for paying in monthly instalments was 26.5% APR. This is more than the average rate (20.49% APR) charged among providers that told us their rates.

You may want to consider paying annually and spreading the cost with an interest-free purchase credit card.

The above information is correct as of December 2025.

How does Sheilas' Wheels compare with other providers?

With a policy score of 68%, the standard cover from Sheilas' Wheels is beaten in our table by premium cover from Allianz and Direct Line, as well as Esure's standard cover. Each scored 69%.

Its Essentials policy scored 61%, just below Admiral Essentials, Beam car insurance, 1st Central's Extra policy, and both the Plus and Plus with Roadside cover from Quote Me Happy (all 62%).

Should you buy Sheilas' Wheels car insurance?

Maybe, if the quote is competitive. Sheilas' Wheels' policies performed reasonably well in our analysis, but its complaints record means we can’t recommend it.
