'Tesco's cover ranges from Best Buy to bargain bin'

Dean Sobers, Which? car insurance expert, says:

Tesco’s Gold policy received 68% in our analysis – placing it comfortably in the top 40% of policies reviewed and a Best Buy.

It’s one of a handful of policies we saw that provides a courtesy car, as standard, if your car is written off or stolen and needs to be fully replaced. And the car is available for your use for up to 28 days.

It also comes with 90 days of cover for driving overseas.

While it did consistently well in the analysis, there were areas where it flagged. These included a low level of cover for medical expenses (£100) and some particularly high compulsory excesses for drivers under 21 (£450).

Uninsured driver promise

If your car is hit by an uninsured driver, you won't be penalised, provided you have the other driver's details.

As soon as Tesco validates the details of the incident (including the other vehicle's make, model and registration number), your no-claims discount will be reinstated.

Silver, Bronze and Cover +

Below its Gold policy, Tesco’s Silver and Bronze options earned 60% and 49%. In other words, around average and pretty poor.

Cover+ - which is sold exclusively through comparison websites - matched Silver, with a 60% score.

How did customers rate Tesco's car insurance?

We asked Tesco Insurance customers who have recently made a claim how they felt about their car insurance.

Tesco Insurance earned a 79% customer score, which places it in the top three out of 12 in our customer satisfaction table. It scored 76% when assessed specifically for its claims service (5th out of 14). The average customer and claims scores were 76% and 75%.

One policyholder who praised Tesco's customer service commented that someone was 'always on hand when I want to ask questions', while another told us that after a car crash, 'it sorted everything out for me with very little hassle'. However, there are some gripes about having to use Tesco's app to do everything.

Here's how customers rated Tesco in various areas of service:

Customer satisfaction

How comprehensive the policy cover is
How affordable the policies are
How thorough the application process is-
Clarity of policy
Dealing with queries
Fair treatment of long-standing customers-
Dealing with complaints-
Value for money

How can you save money on Tesco car insurance?

Tesco's Gold policy is only available directly (on its website or by phone). The other three policies can also be bought via the following price comparison websites:

  • Compare the Market
  • Confused.com
  • Go.Compare
  • MoneySuperMarket
  • QuoteZone

Tesco doesn't offer discounts for buying multiple products or multiple policies. However, Clubcard members can get discounts.

Tesco may also be willing to offer extra discounts if you contact it at renewal to discuss its renewal offer.

Want to pay monthly?

You can choose to pay your premium in one go or in monthly instalments. Paying monthly usually costs more overall. This is because paying by instalments is usually provided as a form of credit, with interest or other charges applied.

When we reviewed Tesco's policies, its rate for paying in monthly instalments was 21.4% APR. This was slightly more than the average rate (20.49% APR) charged among providers that told us their rates.

Another cheaper option would be to pay annually and spread the cost with an interest-free purchase credit card.

The above information is correct as of December 2025.

How does Tesco compare with other providers?

Tesco's customer score of 79% placed it third out of 12 in our customer score table, just behind the RAC and Aviva, both with 81%. Its claims score of 76% landed it in 5th place – Esure scored better with 77%.

With a policy score of 68%, Tesco's Gold cover is just behind the Saga Standard policy, Esure's standard cover and also premium cover from Allianz and Direct Line – they all scored 69%.

Its Silver and Cover + policies, both scoring 60%, were behind Privilege Comprehensive, an Essentials policy from Sheilas' Wheels, the AA's Silver cover and also 1st Central's Extra + Breakdown. These each earned 61%.

Tesco Bronze got a policy score of 49%, below Churchill Essentials, Quote Me Happy Essentials and Aviva Zero Essentials (all with 52%).

Should you buy Tesco car insurance?

Probably, if the price is competitive for you. Tesco impressed us both for service and for the cover in its Gold policy.
