How good are Tesco's car insurance policies?

Tesco's standard Silver policy was close to average in our analysis.

With a score of 60%, the policy was very much in the middle of our table, slightly below the average score of 61%

The policy offers a guaranteed courtesy car for the duration of repairs as well as comprehensive cover for overseas driving for up to 90 days as standard.

However, it lacked cover for misfuelling (putting the wrong fuel in your car). It also doesn't cover damaged or lost car keys as many policies do, although you can pay extra to add this cover.

Uninsured driver promise

If your car is hit by an uninsured driver you won't be penalised, provided you have the other driver's details.

As soon as Tesco validates the details of the incident (including the other vehicle's make, model and registration number), your no-claims discount will be reinstated.

Tesco Silver vs Tesco Bronze, Gold and Cover Plus

Tesco's Bronze policy strips out features such as cover for driving other cars and for your car's windscreen and windows. It was one of the lowest-scoring policies in our assessment, earning a score of just 48%, below the standard Silver policy's 60%.

The premium Gold policy scored 72%, one of the highest-scoring policies rated. However, it failed to meet our Best Buy criteria on account of its complaints record.

Cover Plus, meanwhile, did slightly better than Silver. It achieved an exactly average score of 61%.
